Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Education
Building Bridges Network (BBN) works with individuals and organizations to create opportunities for the children in the rural areas of Africa to advance through education. At this time, BBN is focusing on the country of Sierra Leone. The educational disparity in Sierra Leone is huge, with an estimated illiteracy rate of 65%.
BBN is at the forefront of the movement to bridge the education gap and to secure a solid foundation for the future of children in these rural areas. As opposed to building schools from scratch, BBN focuses more on providing schools with buildings where there are none. We strive to provide an educational environment that is conducive to learning. BBN will not limit its efforts to the improvement of schools. BBN will also provide aid in the form of books, blackboards, chalk and any other stationery that will assist the children.
Water and Sanitation
According to Action Aid, “In Sierra Leone 34% of
people have access to clean water and sanitation. Over 430,000 primary school-aged children in Sierra Leone are out of school. Although many schools were rebuilt after the war, there is still a chronic lack of water and sanitation inside the schools. Without running water or toilets, children are forced to leave classes in search of drinking water, and are often forced to drink from contaminated streams. Nearby bushes are used as latrines, which increases the spread of disease. Girls often feel uncomfortable sharing toilet areas with boys, and so many stay away from school. Many more children are too busy fetching water for their families to attend school.”
Therefore, BBN will engage rural communities that face the challenge of water and sanitation. BBN will accomplish this work at a grassroots level.
Rural Electrification
n rural Africa, electricity is a luxury and not a necessity. This has contributed to undue hardships in poor rural areas. Facilities like health clinics, schools and libraries (where there is one) do not have electricity. Health clinics lack the capability to store medicines for locals; furthermore, children lack electricity to study and read in the libraries after school hours.
BBN wants to help these rural communities by providing access to electricity through solar (photo voltaic), wind and other renewable forms of electricity with the cheapest means.
