What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Family Literacy Program
The VITA Family Reading Program is an intergenerational model to provide instruction in parent education courses in depressed, socio-economic neighborhoods. Parents are taught to read to children while developing their own literacy skills. This is a community-wide inter-agency effort in cooperation with the Lafayette Parish School System, Lafayette Housing Authority, Lafayette Parish Health Unit, and University Medical Center. In cooperation with Big Brothers, Big Sisters, VITA agrees to provide tutoring to parents of children enrolled in Big Brothers, Big Sisters when needed. Seminars and presentations have been provided by American Red Cross, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, area museums, zoos and financial institutions.
English as a Second Language
The VITA ESL program represents an effort to provide a program that incorporates civics education and support services into an integrated and coordinated program for adults of limited English proficiency. Instruction is provided using a model, which combines one-to-one, small group and computer-aided instruction. Program staff teachers and/or VITA-trained volunteers provide instruction at a convenient time and place in neighborhood locations convenient and readily accessible. Information and hands-on experiences that increase the participant's ability to access community resources and communicate more effectively are provided through presentations and field trips. The growing demand for English Language/Civics Education programs demonstrates the increasing need for adults with limited English proficiency to gain the skills necessary to read and communicate in English to prepare themselves for their lives at home, in the community and in the workplace.
Literacy at Work: A Workforce Development Program
The VITA Literacy at Work program represents an effort to provide low-literate adults with the tools to secure and/or advance in employment, in job training programs, and in their daily lives. The program is designed to provide one-to-one or small group instruction to undereducated, underemployed adults at a convenient time and place that is non-threatening and readily accessible. Instruction is provided by program staff teachers and/or VITA-trained volunteers recruited from the community. An assessment of the adult learners' literacy levels, strengths, weaknesses, goals and interests will define the criteria for beginning and continuing an instructional path. By teaching individuals how to help themselves, we can help them take the first critical steps necessary to compete in today's economy, increase their incomes, and secure their own assets. This program is offered at no charge to the participant.
