What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Most AAAs are discovered accidentally, while another medical problem is being examined. Many, many people are saved through a medical intervention. And yet, there are many others whose lives ended suddenly because of this invisible silent killer. Most AAAs have no symptoms, and are only discovered when they rupture, causing intense pain, and, almost always, death.
Why do these preventable deaths still occur? Each one leaves behind a devastated and shocked family.
What can you do to continue to decrease the number of families affected by AAA?
First, find out the risk factors: Are you a smoker or former smoker? Have high blood pressure? High cholesterol? Family member who was affected by AAA?
Second, get screened yourself. Talk to your doctor. Most insurance will cover this simple and painless ultrasound test.
Third, spread the word. Make a donation. Tell your friends and family members how easily they can prevent this silent killer.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Free Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Ultrasound Screening Program

AOI creates community partnerships to offer at risk seniors a free ultrasound screening of the abdominal aorta, the most common location for an aneurysm .  Each program consists of up to 288 eligible participants.  There is a telephone sign-up process, scheduled participants are mailed confirmation letters with instructions that include fasting for a minimum of 8 hours prior to the appointment.  The participants receive a screening form with the mailout and are asked to complete demographics and a medical history pertaining to AAA (abdominal aortic aneurysm).  There is a check-in process, an educational video, a blood pressure check, the ultrasoundsound (4 sonographers are contracted for each event), check-out where the participant receives a copy of results and refreshments prior to departure.  Since males have a far greater risk, door prize drawings for the men are offered to encourage their participation.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our ultimate goal is to increase knowledge and awareness of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) among at-risk populations via direct screening, outreach, education and advocacy in an effort to improve the health of our region's families.

AAAneurysm Outreach partners with healthcare organizations, community-based organizations, faith-based entities and social groups to deliver free ultrasound screening and to provide ongoing AAA education and outreach. We utilize traditional education and outreach methods to reach targeted populations.

Since 2001, AAAneurysm Outreach has provided life-saving early detection screenings for at-risk individuals across the U.S. The organization has also provided ongoing outreach and education to clinical providers, community based organizations and individuals with the goal of fostering healthy families, healthy communities and empowered patients. AAAneurysm Outreach has worked with healthcare organizations, vascular surgeons, sonographers and other clinical personnel to implement its initiatives.

Since 1999, AAAneurysm Outreach has worked with individuals, clinicians, community providers and the business community to save lives, educate the public and protect families from AAA. The organization is committed to a comprehensive approach that includes direct screening, education, support and community outreach. To date, the organization has screened over 9400 individuals.
