ADRENOLEUKODYSTROPHY FOUNDATION

Care Today for a Cure Tomorrow

aka The ALD Foundation   |   Slidell, LA   |  www.aldfoundation.org

Mission

In 1998, the formation of the Adrenoleukodystrophy Foundation started by building coalitions with committed medical professionals interested in finding solutions in the ALD community. ALD is an orphan disease that has limited funding for research. ALD has been striking families through many generations for a very long time. It is an x-chromosome related genetic defect that affects boys, men and females who are carriers. The aim of The ALD Foundation is to assist families, raise global awareness, educate physicians, and ultimately, the eradication of ALD.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

We advise families of boys affected by ALD and men with AMN. Our referrals have led to interventional therapies being administered including cord blood stem cell transplant and bone marrow transplant. Our web Blog gives families the opportunity for advocacy in that sharing information about the course a child will suffer through ALD is beneficial to everyone involved.
We also work to encourage screening programs that can be administered at birth to determine if ALD will be a consequence. Seeing this test gain momentum will allow therapies to be developed, thereby providing solutions.
