Mission

The
mission of the ACORN Institute (AI) is to
empower low- and moderate-income people to improve their communities. AI is founded on the belief that low- and moderate-income people should
receive equal services and have a voice and a role in the policies and
institutions that have an impact on their lives. To accomplish this, AI provides leadership development and training in low- and
moderate-income communities and technical and research assistance to
grassroots community groups. Additionally, AI serves as the lead agency for various
projects that fall under its mission.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Financial Literacy

The ACORN Institute currently sponsors community education programs to promote Financial Literacy and combat predatory lending in Denver, San Francisco, and St. Louis. Each of these projects involves partnerships among community organizations, service providers, and others, to help low- and moderate-homeowners avoid the tactics of predatory lenders - who solicit home loans on fraudulent, deceptive or unfair terms-and to assist those who have already fallen victim to them. For more information on predatory lending and foreclosures and what can be done about them, visit www.acornhousing.org, www.acorn.org, and www.aisj.org.

Population(s) Served

With the generous support of many donors, the ACORN Institute's Hurricane Recovery and Rebuilding Fund has sponsored direct assistance, outreach, and community organizing to help families displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The Hurricane Recovery and Rebuilding project has used technology and person-to-person organizing in shelters, motels, and neighborhoods to reach displaced community members. The ACORN Katrina Survivors Association united members of the displaced communities in order to demand more effective relief efforts and a voice in the rebuilding process.
