The vision for Common Goods is to be a trendy thrift store for the community-minded shopper, owned by Bridges of Hope. Common Goods offers high-quality goods at reasonable prices. Common Goods was created to be a venue for community members to give their time, talents and treasures, which supports the ongoing work of Bridges of Hope. The goal is to have a major impact on the number of products leaving our area and entering landfills. We work to recycle and redistribute these goods within the community, extending their use. As a result, local donations stay local and proceeds from the store serve local families in need. Our first store opened in Brainerd in 2009, and the second store opened in Crosslake in 2015.
Crisis Nursery provides free, short-term childcare during a family crisis. This program is a collaborative partnership between Bridges of Hope and Crow Wing County Social Services. It provides safe, no-cost, short-term crisis childcare for children 0-12 in Crow Wing County. Children are cared for by licensed daycare and/or foster care providers. In 2016, we worked to arrange 37 separate placements for children to have a safe place to stay when their parents needed a break or time to attend to a family crisis. Families may access Crisis Nursery between the hours of 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, seven days a week. Respite Services provides safe, no-cost, regularly scheduled (usually once per month) respite childcare for families with mental health or behavioral challenges, in Crow Wing County. Children are cared for by licensed providers or by family-identified providers who pass a background check. In 2017, we arranged 286 respite care placements for 49 families.
Family Support Services
Through Family Support Services, we can provide longer-term supportive services for families. Staff typically work with families in-home, capitalizing on each family's unique strengths and setting family-led goals to further strengthen and stabilize. This program connects families to community-based supports, with the goal to reduce child abuse and neglect and to empower families to access support in the future. Our current program, Intensive In-Home Services is in partnership with Crow Wing County, and enrollment is limited to referrals from Crow Wing County. In 2016, we served 26 families through Intensive In-Home Services.
Resource Connection Services
Resource Connection Services is a single point of entry in the community for individuals and families with a short-term challenge, crisis or need; connecting them to area resources to regain stability and following up afterward to ensure they were connected to a resource that was able to assist them. This program has also partnered with area churches (benevolence funding) to meet families’ financial needs after all resources have been exhausted. In 2016 we assisted ~1,200 households through this program.
Mental Health Program
The Mental Health Program assists individuals and families in need of counseling or immediate mental health appointments connect to a local therapist or agency, and assists parents and children who are under- or uninsured in paying for an initial counseling session.
Side by Side is a women’s mentoring service launched in 2012. The mission of this program is to move Participants from survival to sustainability by increasing their informal assets through long-term mentoring relationships. Side by Side is a “hand up” for women who are ready and able to make lasting changes in their lives. With the help of a Bridges of Hope Case Manager, each program Participant sets personal goals, and work toward them with the support of volunteer Mentors from the community.
Self-Healing Communities Project
The Self-Healing Communities Model, created in Washington state in the 1990s, is designed to build community capacity to improve outcomes for health and social issues by reducing and preventing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Bridges of Hope proposes to implement a Self-Healing Communities model; a proven method to mitigate adverse childhood experiences, build resiliency, and increase positive health outcomes for residents of our county. The goal of the model is to “to engage the public, inspire innovation, support peer helping, ease the daily stress burden of parents and promote change in all of the systems that serve them so that together communities can better protect and nurture the next generation (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2016).” More stable families will also lead to a decrease in adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which will reduce the risk of future generations repeating the same patterns. Over time, this will lead to a healthier community overall.
