What we aim to solve
Youth Development We create opportunities for youth of all backgrounds to build character, achieve academic enrichment, friendships and lifelong values to lead more fulfilling lives. This also includes improving school readiness among low-income, Hispanic children and supporting their caregivers. Healthy Living Our Healthy Living programs address the most critical health issues that affect the wellbeing of Central Texans. The issues include reducing drowning through providing water safety education and free swim lessons, fighting childhood obesity and creating healthier families, providing support for healthier lives for cancer survivors, diabetic patients, seniors and special needs populations. Social Responsibility We strive to become a catalyst for meaningful personal and social change through fighting food insecurity in the community, developing civic-minded, successful leaders among students, and cultivating volunteers.

Summer Camp
YMCA Summer Camp, Spring and Winter Holiday Camps offer children & teens a safe, exciting, and memory-making day camp experience. Kids have the opportunity to build self-confidence, independence, and creativity, and parents have peace of mind knowing your kids are in a safe and enriching place. At YMCA day camps, campers make friends while learning the values of diversity and cooperation.
The YMCA of Austin offers camps across Travis and Hays Counties including Kinder, Theme, Sports, and Adventure camps. All camps will offer swimming, field trips, games, crafts, and character development activities. Camps will operate from 7:30 am - 6:00 pm at designated schools, churches, and YMCA facilities. Campers will enjoy changing weekly themes, sports, and adventures as well as weekly field trips and twice weekly trips to the pool. Activities are based on the YMCA of Austin's character values (Respect, Responsibility, Honest, Faith, and Caring) and the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets.
- KINDER CAMP (ages 4-5) Kinder Camp is perfect for children who have not yet attended Kindergarten. Kinder Camp offers age-appropriate field trips, games, crafts, and books which emphasize changing weekly themes. This camp has a little more quiet time with all the fun and activities of Theme Camp.
- THEME CAMP (ages 5-12) Children will enjoy a different theme each week. Theme Camp will offer kids new experiences mixed with old camp favorites. Campers thrive during various daily activities including organized games, arts and craft projects, exciting field trips, and swimming. Many activities will focus on the YMCA character values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Caring, and Faith.
- SPORTS CAMP (ages 8-12) YMCA Sports Camp is a perfect destination for every child who enjoys playing sports and being active. YMCA Sports Camp introduces and emphasizes the fundamentals of sports to each child. From skills to drills to the importance of teamwork, Sports Camp provides a fun and supportive environment for athletes of all skill levels. Along with approximately four hours of sports drills, scrimmages, and sports activities each day, campers will also go swimming twice each week, take one field trip each week, and participate in sports-related crafts and character development activities.
- ADVENTURE CAMP (ages 11-14) Designed for the mature and older school-aged kids, Adventure Camp offers greater opportunity for specific skill development. Most of the day will focus on the weekly topic while also offering a healthy dose of swimming, sports, arts and crafts, and field trips. An extra emphasis will be placed on team building and leadership skills this summer.

Afterschool Childcare
The YMCA of Austin offers afterschool care for children in grades K - 5 at 27 licensed sites in four school districts. The Afterschool Care Program provides on-site care for your child, beginning when school is dismissed and continuing until 6:30 p.m.
Participating children learn valuable social and scholastic skills in a safe, fun, and supervised environment.
The afterschool care program offers a constructive balance of counselor led activities and free time for child exploration. Daily theme activities include arts and crafts, science/math activities, nutrition/wellness activities, presentation activities (music, theater, cooking, etc) and literacy. In addition, the Y delivers CATCH physical activity lessons daily and has made a commitment to meet the Y's Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards (HEPA). Lastly, there is always time for homework, a nutritious afternoon snack, and outside time on the playground.
The end of each afterschool day will include Centers: Board Game Blvd., Hard Hat Highway (building), Craft Court (art), Drama Drive, and Literary Lane.
Children are divided into age-appropriate groups for many of the daily activities. Special day-long programs, called All Day Cares, are available for most school holidays (see calendars below) and for all early release days. Care on these days is included with your monthly fees. As with all of our programs, the after school program emphasizes our five character values: respect, responsibility, honesty, faith, and caring. Additionally, after school curriculum is built on the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets.
For more information, contact the Program Services Branch at 512-236-9622. Financial assistance for the YMCA of Austin's afterschool care program is available.
Youth Sports
The YMCA stresses child-oriented attitudes by keeping winning in perspective, having fun, improving physical fitness, and working with the whole child. The YMCA wants the quality of play to improve in order to meet the needs of all participants whatever their ability and skills.
The YMCA accomplishes this by training adult volunteers in clinics and workshops that the child comes first and winning comes second. The key for coaches and parents is to keep winning in perspective. Competition will happen in youth sports without any external pressures. It is important to keep competition at a level appropriate for the athlete.
The goal of the Youth Sports program is to help the child grow to his/her fullest potential in mind, body, and spirit. Activity helps the body grow; thinking advances the mind; and belief makes our spirit grow.

The fee is $10 per Friday, which includes lunch. YMCA membership is not required. Child Care & Early Learning
Children are like sponges - they watch and absorb knowledge, skills and values from everything and everyone around them. At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. That's why our programs are staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical and social development of kids, the need children have to feel connected and supported in trying new things, and the caring and reinforcement parents and families need to help each other. At the Y, babies develop trust and security, preschoolers experience early literacy and learn about their world, and school-age kids make friends, learn new skills and do homework. Most importantly, children learn how to be their best selves. That makes for confident kids today, and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.
Child Watch : With so many demands on today’s families and the increased focus on early brain development, families need all the support they can get to nurture the potential of youth. That’s why child care programs at the Y focus on holistically nurturing child development by providing a safe and healthy place to learn foundational skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build self-reliance through the Y values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Afterschool: The YMCA is dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable care for children. In the US, the YMCA is the nation's largest provider of child care programs, providing family-centered, values-based programs to nurture children's healthy development. Well-trained staff provide safe, affordable, high-quality care so you can have peace of mind while you work. Staff members are partners with parents and other caregivers, working together to help kids grow up healthy, happy and strong.
Learning Centers: YMCA Learning Centers are unique partnerships between the YMCA of Austin and the developers of Austin area moderate housing apartment complexes. Programs and services are offered on-site for children and adults currently living in the apartment complexes. Most services are offered free to the communities and may include afterschool care, summer care, ESL classes, and computer literacy classes.
Early Learning: The YMCA's Early Learning programs provide each child a warm and supportive environment in which to grow. We meet the needs of each child with experiences that foster development and a sense of self esteem. Y programs strive to develop the total child, with particular emphasis on educational, physical, emotional and social skills necessary for success. Our Early Learning Readiness (ELR) program provides a stimulating environment to help children (2 - 5 years) develop the physical, verbal, and social skills which they'll need to be school-ready. Caregivers will learn how children develop and how to encourage skill building at home.
Swimming
Swimming is a life skill as well as great exercise and a challenging sport. Ys offer swim lessons (for all ages), family swim, competitive swimming and diving teams, and many kinds of adaptive swim programs for kids with special needs, so we can all safely enjoy the pleasures of an aquatic environment.

Goals & Strategy
Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.
Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
According to U.S. Census, Central Texas is growing nearly four times faster than the nationwide average, and the population is projected to reach 4 million by the year 2040. As a result, the number of vulnerable children and families who have limited access to healthcare and enrichment opportunities, is also increasing rapidly. Our goal is to ensure equal accessibility for every individual to pursue a balanced, healthier lifestyle as they discover and develop their fullest potential in life.
Within this goal, the YMCA of Austin continuously seeks ways to provide innovative solutions to fill unmet needs such as the health crisis of "Nature Deficit Disorder" among children. Too many children lack meaningful access to nature and outdoor activities and suffer from negative health outcomes. As a direct response, the YMCA of Austin is developing an 85-acre camp and retreat center that will become the physically, geographically, and financially most accessible camp in Central Texas.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The YMCA of Austin's strategies include strong and dedicated leadership, cross-sector partnerships, and financial development through diversified funding sources. The YMCA’s Metropolitan Board of Directors comprised of President/CEO James Finck and 35 board members is fully committed to accomplishing organizational goals as leaders, fiduciaries, and fundraisers. Partnerships fuel the work of the YMCA. We partner with over 120 community partners, including local school districts, non-profit organizations, businesses, healthcare organizations, community organizations and government entities, and makes a bigger impact by combining strengths, networks, and resources.
Each year, the YMCA’s Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers raise more than $1.2M during the Annual Campaign and dedicate 100% of the raised funds to providing financial assistance for low-income individuals. Grant funds enables the implementation and expansion of mission-driven programs that are provided at no cost.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The YMCA of Austin employs 119 full-time staff and more than 1,800 part-time staff to deliver programs and services to our members and program participants.
• Leadership: The Y’s board of directors brings diverse expertise and resources and provides a vision through ensuring effective planning, leadership, adequate financial resources, and legal and ethical integrity.
• Financial Development: Diversified funding sources from individuals and grants support the financial assistance program, and expansion of programs.
• Fiscal Management: We have met or exceeded budget forecasts each year, and received a “clean” audit from our auditors.
• Facility Management: With renovated and clean facilities, the YMCA's eight branches are well positioned to continue growing strong in numbers and in dollars.
• Marketing & Communications: We develop a comprehensive, integrated marketing and communications plan to support key programs and to engage 130,000 members and nonmembers.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Highlights of the YMCA programs and their impact include:
• Academic enrichment and school readiness for over 2,000 children, students and caregivers
• Texas Youth and Government, providing hands-on civic education and leadership development for 2,600 high school and middle school students across Texas
• Project SAFE and SwimATX, teaching 2,500 low-income pre-K and first graders swimming and safety around water each year, and helping 100 at-risk high school students gain lifesaving swimming skills and a lifeguard certification
• Healthy Weight and Your Child childhood obesity intervention program, Diabetes Prevention Program, and LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Cancer Survivor Program, supporting a healthier and active lifestyle
• Special Needs Adaptive Programs (SNAP), serving 800 individuals with special needs to pursue a better quality of life
YMCA Camp Moody is our current project that will open in 2020 to bring the benefits of camping experience and nature to all youth and families.
