Mission

The VZS was established to direct the management of the Gladys Porter Zoo, a facility built by the Earl C. Sams Foundation and given to the City of Brownsville, Texas in 1971. The VZS Board provides broad oversight for paid Zoo staff, sets policies, raises funds, and acts as an advocate for the Gladys Porter Zoo. Board members represent all areas of the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, which makes the organization a regional leader in wildlife conservation.

Gladys Porter Zoo

The Gladys Porter Zoo is a 34.5-acre home to 1,400 animals, many of whom are rare or endangered in their native land. It is extensively landscaped and also serves as a botanical garden. The Zoo is primarily an educational institution stressing wildlife conservation. It is accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. An average of 350,000 guests visit the Gladys Porter Zoo each year and it is the most popular man made recreational facility in the Rio Grande Valley.
