What we aim to solve
While Austin appears at the top of almost every “best of” list, ParkScore by the Trust for Public Lands ranked Austin 42nd out of the 100 most populous U.S. cities for how well we meet residents’ need for parks. When compared to other cities, we shine in the amount of dedicated parkland we have. But when it comes to ensuring that all Austinites have access to green spaces, and that we are investing and maintaining them, we fall incredibly short. At APF, we feel a critical responsibility to invest in, and maintain, our parks for future generations. We believe our public parkland should be preserved and maintained. We believe all Austinites, regardless of where they live, have the right to safe, accessible parks. We believe access to free recreation will make our city healthy and vibrant for years to come. And we believe that citizens should be able to actively come together to improve their parks, and in turn their neighborhoods.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
ACL Music Festival Grants Program
The Austin City Limits Music Festival Grants Program provides direct financial support to volunteers who have signed on as Park Adopters, and contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars in park improvement funding every year. We offer three grant types: The Impact Grant (once per year, $100,000), Community Grants (twice per year, up to $50,000) and Neighborhood Grants (open deadlines, $500 to $4,999)
Movies in the Park
Movies in the Park is a series of free films by Austin Parks Foundation in partnership with Alamo Drafthouse. Each year, APF and the Drafthouse bring you free movies in parks all over Austin. Residents and visitors bring their blanket or lawn chairs (and often a picnic dinner!) for a fun and relaxing evening under the beautiful Austin night sky.
Volunteerism
Austin Parks Foundation leads community members of all ages, backgrounds and neighborhoods in helping to keep our parks updaterd and maintained throug a range of volunteer activities. From our signature city-wide It's My Park Day events, which welcome thousands of volunteers in parks all over the city each Spring and Fall, to our corporate and community group volunteer days, we are striving to connect Austin's residents to the places and space they love most - our parks.
Park Advocacy
APF is leading the grassroots efforts of everyday Austinites, park adopters, and eco organizations in advocating for more funding for our beloved parks, trails and green spaces. Austin consistently ranks in the lower 40's on the Trust for Public Land's ParkScore ranking, which scores how well the top 100 most populous cities care for their parks. This is in large part due to the woeful lack of funding our city's Parks & Recreation Department receives each year. APF aims to change this with the help of Austinites of all stripes, standing shoulder to shoulder, and asking that our parks receive the funding they deserve.
Adopt-A-Park
The success of our parks system depends on the support, assistance, advocacy and enthusiasm of the public as stewards of their parks. The Adopt-A-Park Program helps citizens like you become those stewards through a collaborative partnership between the Austin Parks & Recreation Department (PARD) and Austin Parks Foundation (APF). The goal of this program is to build community pride and ownership around every neighborhood park in Austin.
Park Adopters serve as key community representatives for their park by organizing a community-based volunteer group, and making an ongoing commitment to improving their park. They also encourage engagement with neighbors and park users, and ultimately bring greater innovation and creativity to the park system.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We will ensure that Austin has a top 10 U.S. park system in the next 10 years, as determined by the Trust for Public Land. We aim to fill the city's park funding gap by leveraging volunteers, philanthropists, park advocates and strategic collaborations to develop, maintain and enhance our parks, trails and green spaces
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
1) We Engage – We promote ownership and leadership of parks throughout the city by connecting people to resources, partnerships and education to develop and improve our local parks. We do this through:
o Volunteer Work Days: It's My Park Day, National Trails Day, National Public Lands Day, etc.
o Adopt-A-Park Program
o Park Improvement Education Series
2) We Invest – We financially support projects large and small across the city because of the generous gifts we receive from the local community. With these funds, we are able to ensure our parks, trails and green spaces are dynamic and adaptable to the ever-changing needs of our community, and that the needs of parks and all park users are equitably met. In 2016 we do this through our:
o ACL Music Festival Grants Program: Impact Grant. Community Grants and Neighborhood Grants
o Republic Square Renovation Project
3) We Activate – We encourage use of public space and create programming to engage people in parks throughout the city. We do this through:
o Movies in the Park
o Fitness in the Park
We Innovate – We build creative solutions to Austin's urban sustainability questions and we support strategic pilot projects like:
o Future Forest Project
o Goat Grazing
o Habiturf
o City of Austin Lifeguard Recruitment
4) We Advocate – We lend our voice to issues that are important to our community and we believe in participating in public discourse to protect, sustain and enrich Austin parks, trails, and green spaces.
o Leader in the Great Austin Parks (GAP) Advocacy group
o Member of Go Austin/ Vamos Austin (GAVA) coalition for the 7844 and 7845 neighborhoods
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Austin Parks Foundation (APF) is dedicated to improving the quality of life for the people of Austin and Travis County by strengthening the region's parks system, which spans more than 29,000 acres. A non-profit established in 1992, APF fills the city's funding and resource gap needed to develop, maintain and enhance the
area's 300+ parks, trails and green spaces.
APF fosters innovative public/private partnerships and since 2006, has given over 145 grants totaling more than $2 million in service to the greater Austin community. APF is known for its annual flagship volunteer event, It's My Park Day, and is a presenting partner and beneficiary of the popular Austin City Limits Music Festival at Zilker Metropolitan Park.
With partnership and investment at the forefront of our work, and thanks to the generosity of our donors, sponsors and partners we are able to work toward our mission and goals.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have accomplished some key wins for our community including the renovation of two flagship parks. One, Dove Springs District Park, is in a neighborhood with the highest childhood obesity rate in the area. We were able to help install a brand new, state-of-the-art playscape, and our work continues there as part of the GAVA physical activity sector. The others, Vic Mathias Auditorium Shores, is now more accessible to all park-users, and includes a more sustainable landscape. Additionally we were instrumental in the redevelopment of Austin's most historic park - Republic Square - and managed both the fundraising and construction phases to bring a revitalized green space to Austin's densest neighborhood. We also successfully rallied the community and advocated for a 10% increase to the city's Parks & Recreation budget, and helped pass 2 bond initiatives which granted $230.5 million for park improvements, land acquisition and facility support.
We still have much to do. Our work on multiple high-impact capital projects like St. John Neighborhood Park, Colony District Park, and the EastLink trail (to name a few) has just begun, and many other strategic projects are on the horizon.
