What we aim to solve
The Rivard Report recently stated that San Antonio has the highest percentage of people living in poverty in the 25 most populous metropolitan areas in the United States, and that 381,584 of the citizens living in the San Antonio- New Braunfels metropolitan area live in poverty. As such, poverty, hunger, and food insecurity are pressing issues in our community that need to be addressed in a variety of ways so as to have the greatest impact on the lives of those in need.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Free Food Distribution
Free food distribution to churches and compassion agencies serving individuals suffering from hunger or food insecurity.
Training
At the heart of Daily Bread's goals, we help our partner organizations better serve their communities. Our two most popular trainings are "Experiencing God" and "When Helping Hurts". These two topics help course participants transform the way they address poverty and its root cause within their communities. Additionally, our various community partners offer courses on money management, parenting, grant writing, and leadership development. We empower our partners to go beyond addressing the symptoms of poverty, such as hunger, and educate them on how to better support people living in poverty. Only then can we expect to see transformative impact and change in these communities where we serve.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
As a Christ-centered organization, Daily Bread desires to help our Ministry Partners tackle poverty and food insecurity. We base our work off the book When Helping Hurts: How To Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting The Poor, and focus on the book's defined root cause of poverty- broken relationships. We provide wholesome food to address the pressing need of hunger, and provide training and resources to address the more long term issues associated with poverty.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Daily Bread partners with about 100 Ministry Partners who help us distribute food to those facing hunger. The majority of our Ministry Partners are local churches. Other Ministry Partners include transitional housing facilities, rehab homes, and children's outreach ministries. While weekly food distribution is the foundation of the Daily Bread organization, we also offer a variety of training classes that equip our Ministry Partners with resources and tools that address the root cause of poverty. These classes include topics on parenting, money management, grant writing, and leadership development.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Through our network of Ministry Partners, we distribute about 5 million pounds of food each year, and serve over 30,000 children, adults, and seniors. We have a fleet of refrigerated trucks which allows us to safely collect and distribute fresh, wholesome food. While the majority of the food we distribute is fresh fruit, vegetables, milk and juice, we also distribute shelf stable food and frozen food. We have strategically partnered with a variety of vendors, which include local schools, produce vendors, catering agencies, and wholesale food companies who either donate the food to us, or provide it at a reduced rate. As such, we are able to provide $10 worth of food, for every $1 we receive.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In 2018, we served 13, 687 children, 14,624 adults, and 5,575 seniors. While the numbers for 2019 have not been fully calculated, our current data indicates that we will have served more individuals this year. Additionally, we have plans to increase our training program so as to better equip our Ministry Partners with the tools and resources needed to tackle the long term and short term issues of poverty and food insecurity.
