Outreach, Advocacy, Capacity Building (2012)

Blue Planet Network has a worldwide base of hundreds of volunteers, advocates and corporate employees who raise awareness in their local communities about the safe drinking water crisis. Blue Planet Network supports them by launching grassroots campaigns, employee giving campaigns and strategic partnerships. Blue Planet Network also provides outreach to schools, universities and service clubs, such as Rotary clubs, to raise awareness of how technology, innovation and a human network of WASH advocates and communities can create sustainable solutions to the global safe drinking water crisis. Blue Planet Network empowers local and global communities on how each individual can become an advocate for the cause and create sustainable, positive and measurable change to those most in need.

Population(s) Served

Blue Planet Network’s award-winning Technology & Analytics Platform enables its members to plan, implement and analyze over 1,600 safe drinking water and sanitation projects totaling $41 million. More than 100+ organizations working in 2,400 communities across 27 countries collaborate on Blue Planet Network's platform to plan projects, report on impact, monitor challenges and share expertise.

Blue Planet Network's platform encourages collaboration, increases impact and promotes a cross-sector focus on project results and lessons learned. This is complemented by an expert crowd-sourcing process where members “Peer Review” other organizations seeking feedback on their project implementation plans. Utilized collaboratively in a safe space, the Peer Review program is aimed at unlocking the tremendous knowledge of the global WASH sector. Since 2006, 236 project plans have been peer reviewed on Blue Planet Network’s platform. This program has demonstrated an increase in member standards, discussion, and accountability in the WASH sector. Additionally, funders often choose to invest in our member projects due to this program.

Blue Planet Network offers its members SMS Text Monitoring and Android Smart Phone services to track and sustain the long-term impact of their water projects. Members can quickly and easily send SMS text messages to report on metrics or upload photos illustrating a project’s milestones, during and after implementation. These low-cost tools are helping to remedy project challenges, scale sustainable practices, and empower communities to take charge of their own water solutions. Building upon experience and member input, Blue Planet Network is launching its next generation online platform in early 2014. With the growing demand for Blue Planet Network's award-winning WASH platform, there also comes the need for expanded reporting and analytics, more funder-focused services, project post-implementation tracking, and simplified user experience.

Population(s) Served

Blue Planet Network's online network of 100+ members have implemented over 1,600 water and sanitation programs in 27 countries since 2006. Overall, Blue Planet Network empowers and strengthens the ability of its implementing members to successfully manage, monitor and sustain their projects. Blue Planet Network's services and programs enables funders to choose an array of high quality and vetted water and sanitation projects. Please visit our website for further information: http://blueplanetnetwork.org/programs-projects/.

Population(s) Served

Blue Planet Network has amassed a global community of water visionaries, funders, and organizations who have delivered safe drinking water and sanitation to 1,000,000 people worldwide. Please visit our site to read more: http://blueplanetnetwork.org/members/. Blue Planet Network empowers its members to connect, collaborate and share innovative ideas so the water sector can observe, replicate proven models, and celebrate stories of success.

Blue Planet Network's vision is a world in which all people have affordable access to sustainable safe drinking water and the health, educational and economic opportunity. Blue Planet Network achieves its vision by empowering its donor community -- individual donors, foundations and corporations -- to see how their dollars are directly helping communities help themselves to a better future through clean water and sanitation. Our donor communities understand that the long-term impact of sustainable safe drinking water allows children – especially girls – to go to school, empowers women to work and become community leaders, and enables communities to grow. For every $1 spent on water and sanitation globally, society gains $8 in decreased health care costs and better economic development. (United Nations Development Programme).

Blue Planet Network helps funders find quality water projects by knowledgeable organizations working in 27 countries and helps them to achieve their greatest impact by matching their goals with a certified water project. Blue Planet Network empowers individual funders to take control of their funding decisions by delivering ongoing project progress, data and long-term monitoring reports online for easy access and full transparency.

Blue Planet Network has seen a significant increase of funder interest in WASH projects because it directly connects funders to NGOs and project communities. Although funders may be continents away, they still have an up-close look and hands-on tools to monitor and track project planning, implementation, and impact through our platform. This transparent process increases funder engagement and builds confidence in future funding and investment. Funding ongoing monitoring efforts is also a cost-effective way to ensure investment dollars continue to have the impact funders seek.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Blue Planet Network's goal is to sustain the long-term impact of safe drinking water programs for people around the world, and the opportunity for health, education and economic opportunity it brings. Our objective is to orchestrate a collaborative network to learn from each other, address why more than 50% of all water projects fail within the first years of completion - and solve the global water crisis.

Resultantly, Blue Planet Network has built an online platform and integrated analytical and tracking system to measure impact and water program results using business intelligence tools. This enables Blue Planet Network and its 105 members comprised of funders and NGO project implementers to effectively track and manage the planning phase, implementation phase, and the post implementation phase of their water and sanitation projects.

We measure our performance by the data our members input, track and analyze on the platform. Members input and track, at all times, region and time period of project, project challenges and successes, diversity and quantity of people impacted (women, children, low income), water volume and quality, water and sanitation usage, and more. The outcomes of this data and Blue Planet Network's human network approach are tracked on an on-going basis and measured by:

* Number of applications peer reviewed to date: 209
Goal for 2013: 55
Goal for 2014: 85

* Total $ Peer Reviewed to date: $9,111,917

* Projects currently in needing of Funding: 52

* Number of Blue Planet Network members to date: 105

* Number of active countries to date: 27

* Number of people empowered with WASH to date: 1.1MM
Goal 2013: 1.2 MM people
Goal 2014: 2 MM Pople

* Communities Assisted to date: 2,438

* Total Programs/Projects to date: 1647

* Projects In Progress: 87

* Total $ Managed to date: $42MM
Goal 2013: $45MM
Goal 2014: $74MM

* Community Contribution: 10.3%

As Blue Planet Network grows its program, the longer-term quantitative and qualitative goals include:

* Identification of best practices in reviewed projects

* Depth and frequency of feedback provided by reviewers

Blue Planet Network's goal is to help sustain the long-term impact of safe drinking water programs for people around the world, and the opportunity for health, education and economic opportunity it brings. Our primary strategy of doing this is by bringing together the main players of the global water, sanitation and hygiene sector - funders, NGO implementers, and communities in need - via an online platform to cost-effectively plan, fund, manage and analyze clean water and sanitation programs around the world. Please read more about our specific strategies and programs in Capabilities, Indicators, and Progress.

Technology System & Analytics Program:
Blue Planet Network’s Online Technology System enables its community of funders, organizations and individuals to cost-effectively plan, fund, manage and analyze clean water and sanitation programs around the world. Blue Planet Network’s award-winning technology and knowledge-management platform focuses on increasing the impact and efficiencies of the full life cycle of a project, not just the “well or toilet.” The platform has an integrated analytical and tracking system that measures impact and program results using business intelligence tools, enabling water, sanitation and hygiene NGOs and funders to track and manage the planning phase, implementation phase, and the post-implementation phase. Members can track and analyze all data on the platform, including: region and time period, project challenges and successes, diversity and quantity of people impacted (women, children, low income), water volume and quality, water and sanitation usage, community involvement and more. Additionally, NGOs can deliver ongoing project progress, data and long-term monitoring reports online for easy access and full transparency for funders.

Peer Review Program: The Peer Review program and process is aimed at unlocking the tremendous knowledge of the global water and sanitation sector. Blue Planet Network utilizes an innovative process based on sector need to create long-lasting WASH practices, understanding and institutional change. Bringing people together to unleash the power of knowledge scales Blue Planet Network’s global community’s ability to effectively and affordably reach a greater number of people in need.

Reporting & Monitoring Program: Everything Blue Planet Network does is designed to help sustain the long-term impact of safe drinking water programs for people around the world, and the opportunity for health, education and economic opportunity it brings. For this reason, Blue Planet Network offers a robust Reporting & Monitoring service to help members improve the efficiencies and scalability of their programs to serve more people in need. One of the primary goals of the service is to address the fact that half of all water and sanitation programs fail after the first few years of implementation. Blue Planet Network’s services and tools are designed to monitor, report and track the sustainability of quality water and sanitation projects and the involvement of its members on the platform for years to come.

We measure our performance by the data our members input, track and analyze on the BPN platform. Please see more in the Indicators section.
------

Reporting and Monitoring Program:
By 2013, Blue Planet Network will have approximately 25% of implementing members across four regions of the world (Africa, Latin America & Caribbean, Asia, U.S.) using SMS to report mid-project to post-implementation status for over 200 projects. Blue Planet Network is expanding its SMS service to include Android Smartphones to scale impact to reach a greater number of people in need in rural areas. Blue Planet Network’s Android Smartphone Monitoring application has a simple interface that displays all NGO projects and site locations and an intuitive and simple template for taking field notes or uploading project photos. This application allows messages to queue up until an internet connection is established if there is no internet at the project site. Notes easily sync to projects on Blue Planet Network’s platform with the sync feature.

Peer Review Program:
Every year, nearly 20-40 organizations submit approximately 30-50 water or sanitation projects to Blue Planet Network to be peer reviewed by fellow members and experts in the WASH sector. Since the program’s inception in 2006, over 210 applications have been peer reviewed and vetted. Once a Blue Planet Network member submits its application for peer review, 5-7 carefully selected water experts will take 3-4 weeks to review the project in detail, focusing on key indicators and measurable metrics that ensure a project’s sustainability, quality and long-term success. These indicators include: management of project; diversity and number of people, communities and families impacted; budget and community involvement; region and time period; project challenges and successes; background on location and communities in need; water volume, quality and usage; and more. During the peer review process, each expert has the opportunity on Blue Planet Network’s platform to ask valuable questions about the project. This enables all parties to carefully examine and participate actively in an online forum that helps one another to design high-quality water projects and gain knowledge. Once they have peer reviewed the project, each expert will rate the project from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) which will then move the project through the peer review approval process.

The Peer Review program has proved to help members increase investment impact and accountability, lower program costs, foster learning through partnership building and collaboration, and radically improve water program planning, management, monitoring and analysis. This human network approach unveils long-term solutions to address the root causes of project roadblocks and leads to sustainable outcomes. Funders can be even more confident of supporting water and sanitation projects that have been vetted and approved via Blue Planet Network’s Peer Review program.
