What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Community After School Tutoring (CAST)

YES provides tutoring for children in Grades 1 - 8 every weekday throughout the academic year. In addition to direct curricular support, YES runs a variety of planned activities geared towards promoting the development of language, critical-thinking, problem-solving skills, curiosity, and confidence in learning. Volunteer tutors are students from Rutgers and individuals from the community who have a passion to help children reach their highest potential.

Population(s) Served

X-Cite Nite is an after school program that provides a safe environment in which youth can engage in positive and stimulating activities run by YES staff and volunteers. The volunteer staff lead games or creative activities each night and share positive messages that pertain to character development, morals, and ethics.

Activities encourage interactive team building and cooperative competition that build character and problem-solving skills. Youth develop healthy relationships and build self-esteem. Snacks, beverages and, hot meals (when possible) are provided for all participating youth.

Population(s) Served

Oasis Summer Camp participants spend their summers growing into children with higher confidence, stronger social skills, and an expanded understanding of the world around them.

Camp runs for a total of eight weeks each summer. Activities include organized sports, arts and crafts, music, and self-esteem workshops. On Tuesdays, campers spend the day at a local pool. On Thursdays, the camp takes a field trip, which is an important learning experience and a way for children to broaden their horizons. Breakfast and lunch are provided everyday.

Counselors include AmeriCorps volunteers, college students, and leaders from local churches who share a passion for helping at-risk youth transition successfully into adulthood.

Population(s) Served

The Shine & Strength programs aim to increase self-confidence in children. These programs equip girls and boys with the knowledge and skills to discover who they are and the person they want to become by using a variety of activities, including role-playing and guided conversations. The program hopes to offer children a new language to speak about what they value and treasure in their lives and to state their hopes and preferences. By increasing children's confidence and helping them think about their future, we are empowering children to make health decisions.

Shine & Strength is operated by trained volunteers.
