Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The goal of MCRC is to enable each individual child to reach his or her highest potential. Many of the children we serve cannot be "cured," but treatment can improve each child's capabilities so that they are able to enjoy near-normal, independent adult lives. Occupational therapy focuses on helping children overcome difficulties with sensory impairment and teaching children to use their arms and hands in appropriate ways. Physical therapy involves teaching children how to overcome their physical disabilities so that they can access their communities as independently as possible by gaining and improving mobility, whether that means crawling, walking, using a walker or crutches, or navigating a wheelchair. Speech therapy helps children learn to communicate and use muscles of the face and mouth area for essential functions such as eating, swallowing, and speaking. The West Texas Dyslexia Center provides evaluation and private one-on-one tutoring for children with dyslexia.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Therapists work together in interdisciplinary areas to assure all goals are being addressed in each session. The physical therapy team knows what the occupational team is working on as does the speech component. All three have input into the success of the child.
Because the Center is not bound by insurance limitations, therapists are able to think outside the box on ways to propel the child forward. This may involve aquatic therapy, hippotherapy or small group therapy.
MCRC meets the following objectives to provide the best quality services at no charge to the family, insurance, or Medicaid/CHIP:
(1) To follow best practice standards of care using evidence-based strategies, establish appropriate, measurable outcomes, within an environment of care that respects the dignity of all people
(2) To respond instantly to acute situations without having to pre-certify or limit strategies or procedures to approved reimbursables
(3) To evaluate the child holistically based on parents interview, long term goals (i.e. “growth years" or lifetime) through cross-discipline consultation and / or co-treat as appropriate.
(4) To create a Plan of Care based on the results of the objective evaluation, the needs and goals of the family, the ability to choose intensity of intervention (i.e. 1 – 5 times / week), caregiver education and training, and to incorporate a variety of ancillary programs (i.e. hippotherapy, aquatics, therapeutic dance, our fitness program POWER, and our parents' support and education group called Hanen) that are not available elsewhere in the Permian Basin.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
All of our therapists are licensed and specialize in pediatric care. We are staffed with 2 PhD graduates and 12 Master's graduates, and all therapists maintain their license yearly through continuing education.
Children are referred to MCRC by a physician or parent for an initial evaluation for speech, physical, and occupational therapy. During this evaluation, the child's strengths and weaknesses are identified and a treatment plan is made. Each child receiving services has individual goals and benchmarks, depending on the severity of his or her disability and diagnosis. These goals are aimed at giving the child the skills they need to be as independent as possible.
Family members are educated on ways to assist in child's goals as this can encourage their progress.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
MCRC serves Midland and 19 other West Texas and New Mexico counties. In addition, the Center provides a clinical site for internships for professional students from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, The University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas Tech Health Science Centers in Lubbock and Odessa, Odessa College, and other centers of higher education inside and outside Texas.
