What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?


YW-CARE is an extensive after-school program in collaboration with local school districts. Each site is a licensed childcare program providing educational and recreational activities for pre-K through 5th grade.
YW-CARE gives working parents a safe, affordable alternative to leaving children home alone. The program operates from the time school is over each day until parents arrive from work. Children also receive a healthy after-school snack daily.

Through the focused development of literacy and school readiness, we believe all children of Lubbock deserve the finest care and highest quality education. The YWCA, in collaboration with South Plains Community Action Association, offers eight early learning classrooms with the primary focus of preparing children for kindergarten and school readiness.

All our infant/toddler teachers have their CDA (Child Development Associates). All pre-school teachers have an Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Early Education and significant training in the special needs of early childhood and the impact of high-risk factors in the home and family. There is frequent interaction with parents and an emphasis on helping parents develop strategies to support each child’s specific needs. Our curriculum is the Frog Street Curriculum, a comprehensive pre-kindergarten curriculum. In conjunction with this, the classroom learning framework matches up with the Pre-K guidelines for the State of Texas. This includes:

Our Infant Care & Preschool programs are available through Head Start, Early Head Start, and Private Pay options.

Our aquatics program offers a breadth of activities that meet the needs of every age and fitness level. From Aqua Tots swim lessons and lap swim to classes for those suffering from arthritis and orthopedic disabilities, as well as a variety of certification classes, there is something for you!

With an outdoor pool (information below), we can accommodate hundreds of splashing people during the summer months. The pool is available for private parties and proudly serve men and women of all ages and at every level of fitness. Lifeguards are on duty at all times.

Our outdoor pool at 6204 Elgin Avenue operates during the summer months. Its capacity of 450 makes it perfect for YWCA Summer Camps, day care centers throughout the city, and families that come to enjoy a day of swimming or a celebration party.
Our well-rounded land fitness and wellness programs offer something for women and men of all ages and fitness levels—people seeking individual workouts or group settings, those wanting highly organized activities or unstructured pursuits.

The YWCA also cooperates with many youth programs throughout the city to offer sports activities for boys and girls including indoor soccer, basketball and volleyball!

The Women's Health initiative provides funds for breast and cervical exams to uninsured and underinsured women and men who meet program guidelines. WHI serves more than 1,000 women annually with clinical breast exams, mammograms, and pap tests. WHI is structured to arrange follow-up care for women who receive a positive diagnosis.

Women of Excellence
A program which recognizes and honors women in our community who excel in their careers. Since 1989, the YWCA has honored 289 Women of Excellence who have been inspiring others in Lubbock not only with their professional achievements, but also with the work they do for the community. They serve as role models for current and future generations.

Father Daughter Dance
The Father/Daughter dance is an amazing event to allow dads to spoil their daughters for an evening. YWCA of Lubbock and supporters make this day a day to remember with treats, food, DJ and lots of dancing.

Lemonade Day Lubbock
Lemonade Day is a fun, experiential program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their very own business - a lemonade stand. Each year, in participating cities, youth have the opportunity to experience entrepreneurship by setting up their business during their city's community-wide Lemonade Day.

Wine Women & Shoes
An engaging and exciting fundraising event where community-minded, philanthropic women (and a few good men) gather to sip, shop, savor, and support a worthy cause in a chic, fun, and innovative way.

Explore all the possibilities for hosting business events, community events, performances, and more at The Legacy Event Center, an historic downtown facility at 14th Street & Avenue O in Lubbock, Texas. This beautifully refurbished multi-purpose facility—with majestic spaces, exceptional acoustics, beautiful artwork, functional meeting rooms with audio/visual capabilities, and catering areas—offers an ideal location for your event.

Within the Legacy Event Center you can find the Lubbock landmark, the organ, which is a world class Tschudi pipe organ. The organ is very unique in which it is that every mechanical piece is made of wood and it is one of the most space-efficient pipe organs around. It’s called a tracker organ and because the pieces are wooden, humidity greatly affects the organ’s tuning. Its unique nature and the wonderful space of Talkington Hall make the acoustical sound unmatched anywhere in Lubbock.

The YWCA of Lubbock aspires to become the “go to” community resource for the City of Lubbock with focus in four core areas: early childhood care, health and wellness initiatives, youth and adolescent services and community outreach. The YWCA of Lubbock’s goal is to increase access to affordable recreation, affordable health and wellness resources, affordable childcare and affordable educational and enrichment opportunities. Another goal is to increase resources for all youth-serving organizations in the community, including affordable child care spaces. As we bring the community together to share and experience the YWCA’s seventeen unique programs and outreach events, we believe we can impact our ultimate goal of eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

We are focused on sharing our impact to increase the visibility and brand of the YWCA. We are building a new recreation and community center to increase our outreach and range of services. The building is set to be completed in May 2016. Increasing the YWCA’s overall financial support will have immediate impact on available resources to all the programs and help the leadership team reach the vision of the YWCA. Increasing the overall funding and broadening the circle of individuals who give to the YWCA will help increase our brand and financial resources. We have invested significantly in our development department, adding staff and technology to support the efforts. We are also focused on developing the talents of our staff to ensure our clients receive a top of the line experience with our programs.

The YWCA values of integrity, compassion, leadership and commitment are put into action through the efforts of a committed staff and board of directors. With 280 full and part-time staff, the YWCA is a robust organization with plenty of talent, energy, and enthusiasm to reach our goals through collaboration with all our many community partners.
• The Legacy Event Center: a multi-purpose facility perfect for weddings, galas, receptions, business events, musical and theatrical performances, luncheons, etc.
• Women of Excellence: honoring women leaders in careers and community service annually since 1989
• Father Daughter Dance: Annual Valentine’s Dance promoting family engagement and offering young ladies 12 and under the opportunity for a special day with dad.
• Lemonade Day: Collaboration with business and civic organizations to give youth the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship by having their own lemonade stand.
• Child Development Center: award-winning care for infants and preschool-age children with research-based curricula emphasizing age-appropriate development of social, emotional, cognitive, and gross motor skills
• Head Start: classrooms serving 131 families with children aged 3- through 5-years in collaboration with the South Plains Community Action Association
• Texas School Ready! Project: preschool-readiness program for early childhood staff that provides intensive training, mentoring, and instructional materials to Head Start, child care, and school district classrooms and dramatically improving kindergarten readiness of thousands of preschoolers
• Breast & Cervical Health Initiative (BCHI): exams and follow-up care to more than 1,000 women annually who meet program guidelines
• CHIP: outreach assistance enrolling children in a full-service insurance program for income-eligible families. Impacted with an increase of more than 11,000 enrollees
• Aquatics: swim lessons, exercise classes, lap swim, family swim, pool parties, and certification classes in CPR, first aid, lifeguard training, and babysitting
• Land Fitness: classes in yoga, Zumba, seniorcise, tai chi chih, taekwondo, and more for all levels, plus a weight room and full-size gymnasium.
• Camps: care for pre-K through 5th graders during LISD holidays, teacher workdays, and summer. Impacts more than 300 families each summer
• Exceptional: care and activities for special needs children in 1st through 5th grade
• Texas Healthy Adolescent Initiative (THAI): collaborative initiative that aims to keep Lubbock a 100 Best Community for Young People
• YW-CAre: educational and recreational activities after school for pre-K through 5th-grade children at more than 30 neighborhood elementary schools.
Y*100: dedicated to bringing together teens to instill leadership principles and life skills to help them discover their full potential.

    We closed a indoor pool for maintenance reasons but now we have seen there is such a demand and need for another indoor pool option that we have advocated at a city level to see this come to fruition.

    We have seen it has shifted our rules to better accommodate patrons and become more customer centric. Even changes as small as the food we serve at our sporting events or community pool, to the rules that we have for our programs-- It has shifted the decisions we make on programs and how we allocate resources. We have shifted our priorities and processes over the feedback we have received.
