What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Core Program

Attitudes & Attire® is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting personal growth for women seeking self-sufficiency. Our program provides the tools that raise self-esteem, promote ethics and build the confidence necessary to develop successful life skills. Our vision statement is "Building Confidence, Changing Lives” for the women we serve.

In 1996, Lyn Berman founded Attitudes & Attire® to encourage and inspire women facing difficult life situations – including domestic violence, substance abuse, poverty and illness. She saw a need to address areas not traditionally covered in workplace training, including raising self-esteem and providing work-appropriate attire. Given the overwhelming barriers to their success, many of the women we serve suffer from low self-esteem. This lack of confidence hinders their ability to become gainfully employed.

The workshops at Attitudes & Attire® help women recognize their self-worth, create a positive image, and improve job-search skills. Additionally, we provide each client with work-appropriate outfits from our boutique which is stocked primarily with donations. By restoring a woman’s belief in herself and dressing her to put her best foot forward, we encourage her to unlock opportunities she may otherwise never know.

Since the agency’s inception, more than 19,000 women have acquired the tools to build the confidence they need to succeed.

Population(s) Served

Throughout our existence, Attitudes & Attire® has adapted to the needs of the women we serve. In response to an overwhelming need among our clients, we added a restorative dental program in 2006. Hopeful Smiles™ is a partnership with Dallas-area dentists to restore the oral appearance of women whose teeth and gums have been severely damaged. This program concentrates on women whose smiles have been most affected by illness, neglect, poverty, substance abuse, or violence – all severe hindrances to positive self-esteem. Hopeful Smiles™ was founded as a natural progression to re-enforce and uphold the mission and vision of Attitudes & Attire®. This program is an additional fundamental step towards raising self-esteem and preparing women to success in the workforce.

Population(s) Served

Our newest program, Boots to Heels, is a customized program designed exclusively for female veterans giving them the camaraderie of being with peers who understand the experiences and challenges they face when returning home. We provide a four part program to assist female veterans with their transition from military to civilian life. We emphasize the value of their military service, helping each woman recapture her self-esteem. After participating in our workshops on self-esteem and interview skills, each veteran is invited to select professional attire and accessories from our upscale boutique.
