What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

In 2017 our community had 14.2% of the population living at "below the poverty line". Survey reports from a volunteer driver observed that several clients on her route use the 29 Palms Food for Life ministry meals delivered to them as the sole source of meal for their week. In about 6 months, their situation had improved to using the meal as the sole source for half of the week.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

For I was hungry, and you fed me. Matthew 25:13

PROBLEM: The 2017 city census of Twentynine Palms, California reported this year 14.2% of the city population is living at "below the poverty line". This puts a large number of families at risk for homelessness. One volunteer driver survey reported that families use the food for life meals as their main source of nutrition for the week. After 6 months their situation had improved to use the source for about 3 days (mid week). It is the layman citizen observation that anyone can find themselves in needy situations when food becomes scarce as money is tight. IMPACT: Food for life nutritious and hot meals can significantly improve the outlook of 200-300 families. We can keep community relationships to the elderly through connections to other resources like Outreach and more than simply just delivering a meal. But looking after them and forming friendships. SOLUTION: Expand the reach of the community. Communicate information to the city. Deliver meals to the shut-ins and serve meals at our location every Saturday.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The primary goal of 29 Palms Food for Life ministry is to provide a hot meal every Saturday for families and those people in the most need of food like the unemployed, underemployed, and homeless. We aim to accomplish this without discrimination to religion, background, age, color, gender, or ethnicity. Everyone is treated like family. The secondary goal is to build community relationships and by providing opportunities for fellowship as well as serving as a connection to other community sources of help like the Outreach program in the city.

Strategy is simple, keep the operation running within budget by using all community relations like the Food distribution center of the region. Communication and planning and power of volunteers.

Our cost is $1.15 per plate. In the year 2018, Food for Life served 16,252 meals. In the year 2017, Food for Life served 11,831 meals. We are currently able to operate a successful event for 200-300 people once a week. On a holiday we are able to successfully operate for 450-600 people. Many of this comes from out-of-pocket donations from private donors and volunteers themselves. We also have been recipient of a grant of about $3.5K from Stater Bros.

In the year 2004, 29 Palms Food for Life ministry opened doors to provide a free to the community at large one time out of every month. In the year 2012 we went from once a month to every Saturday. It is our goal to increase our out reach (through community information) and also to open a Food for Life building with facilities for those folks in need like a shower and a place to fellowship.
