What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The only food-rescue program in Houston, Food Rescue recovers surplus perishable foods donated by food-industry businesses and delivers it to emergency shelters, agencies, and food pantries on the front line feeding those in our community suffering from the physical and emotional effects of hunger.
End Hunger Network?s Meal Prep program provides nutritious, protein-rich meals to the hungry men, women, and children in the greater Houston area.
Established as a pilot program in April 2003, Meal Prep originally transported short-dated meat donated by H-E-B to donated kitchen space. At those kitchens, the meat was cooked, seasoned, and combined with donated vegetables and rice or potatoes to make wholesome meals?enough to serve a family of four. The meals were frozen and then distributed to hunger-relief agencies throughout greater Houston. In July 2006, End Hunger Network opened its own 14,950 square-foot kitchen, storage, and operations facility that will still prepare donated food into meals, and it will do so with greater efficiency, greater service, and a greater number of meals to our partner agencies and the hungry people they feed. It is expected to provide 1.8 million individual meals in its first year of operation. The facility is totally unique in Houston and within the nationwide America?s Second Harvest Network, and will serve as a model nationwide for fresh meat rescue?the next generation of food banking.
Red Barrel meets the critical need for food supplies at local food pantries. End Hunger Network?s red barrels are placed in grocery stores across the city for consumers to fill with purchased and donated nonperishable foods, including those found in prepackaged ?Help End Hunger? bags. Each barrel is assigned to a neighborhood food pantry; the pantry?s staff and volunteers collect and distribute the food. Operating in more than 250 grocery stores, Red Barrel gives consumers a convenient way to donate food 365 days a year.
