Mission Statement

Our Mission is: to provide a place in perpetuity where individuals with disabilities can be successful, equal, and capable; growing to their maximum life's potential through interaction with horses in a positive environment.
We accomplish our mission by providing educational, recreational, and sport programming, including vocational/pre-vocational opportunities, to youth at risk and youth and adults with disabilities. Individuals are accepted without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background. Our funding comes from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

Notes from the Nonprofit

Our current home is becoming untenable due to excessive amounts of rain returning it to it's wetlands state and our current lease by suffrage which does not allow for improvements. The owner, an investor, has put the property up for sale which necessitates that we relocate as quickly as possible. Major financial help is needed to relocate within our prime service area. We have located an acceptable acreage that is not a wetlands. The capital campaign plan is in action. Help is needed to reach our goal.

Our future home will be energy efficient, expandable, with vastly improved security. The design allows for future fundraising to be conducted on property thus minimizing fundraising costs while maximizing appropriate positive program exposure.

A permanent home will also allow us to expand program offerings that will provide financial stability in addition to continuing our original programming.

Future stability is outlined in our Business Plan.

We have proven through entering our athletes in an open horse show for 3 years straight that Inclusion works and that people with disabilities are equally capable given the opportunity. Moreover, examples of our athletes true abilities include: induction into National Honor society, entrance into college, recruitment for the high school cheerleading squad, consistent appropriate behavior at school. Parents have relaxed, joined in activities, and found that they too have something to share with the community. Our adjudicated youth program (95% success rate) continues to provide a real life experience in hard, menial work to youth who have chosen a negative path. Each of them leaves with the understanding that a more positive path is preferable. Volunteers stand in awe as our athlete/volunteers work hand in hand with them and often are the trainer rather than the trainee. One volunteer, an EMT by trade, stated that he is a better EMT because he now understands that people with disabilities can and should be allowed to do what they can for themselves even if it takes a bit more time. For another volunteer, who just happens to have epilepsy, Dream Catcher is the first place where she has been accepted as an individual. Friendships and life connections are now possible for her. The real secret: our horses are the therapists, we provide the safe, friendly environment. As we strive to acquire a permanent home, our participants and volunteers and sustaining donor ensure that the program continues and grows in spite of the mud, rain, extreme heat, and totally portable facilities.

Currently teaching youth and adults with disabilities and youth-at-risk to ride and care for horses. Our riders compete in two horse shows annually. The adjudicated youth community service program continues to demonstrate a 94% success rate.

Five powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

  1. What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
    We have four immediate goals.
    1) to continue our program which is currently weather dependent. While the weather caused us to lose over 50% of our program days in 2015, In 2016 we reached an all time lesson high of 522 lessons due to good weather.
    2) to secure a permanent home. Our search located a "high and dry" property available for purchase. The goal -- property purchase by December 31, 2018. Usable facility by June 2020. This is a necessity as our current location with a lease by suffrage is up for sale.
    3) to meet our needs with fundraising. A $2,100,000 capital campaign is underway to resolve both goals 1 and 2. April 30, Dream Catcher Roundup, was the official launch of the capital campaign. September 30, Dance for the Dream raised funds for our annual budget and awareness which directly lead to an open house - Dream Catcher Christmas scheduled for December 3rd and postponed to December 10th due to the weather.
    4) to pilot the behavioral weekday program within the year with the goal of full behavioral weekday program launching at our permanent facility. This wrangler program will assist local school districts in redirecting students from behavioral to regular campus life.
  2. What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
    To achieve our goals we will:
    1) Continue our in-house capital campaign with a short term goal of $40,000 by June 2017, an Intermediate goal of $300,000 by December 31, 2018, and the end goal of $3,000,000 by December 31, 2020.
    2) Identify potential donors and acquire major grants. Corporations are on board to help with concrete, land preparation, electrical and plumbing needs, welding, and the caretaker's house. We are now recognized by the Greater Houston Community Foundation. People are stepping forward with additional fundraising opportunities.
    3) work to improve our board and provide consistent training for new board members and all volunteers as we move to our permanent facility
    4) Pilot a written plan for working with difficult students in Aldine ISD during the school day during the 2017-2018 school year, or before. Refine the plan and present it to targeted districts for their approval during the 2018-2019 school year.
  3. What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
    Our all volunteer public charity has the ability to
    1) allow volunteers to select the time and extent to which they commit ensuring that volunteers remain/become enthusiastic about and dedicated to our mission.
    2) succeed on a minimal budget through careful shopping and a variety of in-kind donations (a large number of which are made anonymously or without documentation to us)
    3) serve people regardless of ability to pay. Athlete families now are beginning to "pay it forward" in order to ensure that this successful program will always be here for them.
    4) sustain itself demonstrated by completion of our 17th year and continual growth of participants and volunteers without formal marketing.
    5) provide personal growth for everyone involved.
    6) expanding our presence on social media and in the community as time allows suing the information given by Professor O'Neal's Campaign Class at Sam Houston State University in the fall of 2016.
    7) reach further to garner additional sustaining donors.
    8) a Founder and President with a never give up attitude.
  4. How will they know if they are making progress?
    We measure our successes by
    1) number of lessons our participants receive each year with consideration for inclement weather days.
    2) progress of our participants in horsemanship including their ability to compete at the horse shows we attend.
    3) number of volunteer hours and number of volunteers who make our program happen.
    4) funding - we operate on a cash basis.
    5) marketing opportunities including press received and requests for speakers
    6) retention of participants and volunteers.
    7) use and review of our GuideStar metrics.
  5. What have and haven't they accomplished so far?
    Celebrating our 17th birthday this past August we
    1) are in a capital campaign to secure a permanent home.
    2) maintain 30-40 athletes each year taught 267 lessons in 2015 with just 47% of the possible lesson days operational due to the weather. In 2016 we just taught the 522 lessons due to good weather. Our 2016 competition team of 20 riders brought home a total of 8 first, 4 second, 7 third, 6 fourth, 10 fifth, 7 sixth, and 13 participation awards. The 2017 team saw 17 riders earn 4 first, 3 second, 8 third, 5 fourth, 8 fifth, 9 sixth, and 10 participation awards.
    3) have developed a grant writing committee and are redesigning our grant writing.
    4) have 3,080 volunteer hours given by 95 volunteers in 2015. Just 4174 volunteer hours by 133 volunteers in 2016 have accomplished 95% more lessons.
    6) raised $35,809.47 through our internal capital campaign using just three emails to board members, athletes and volunteers, garage sales, and 3 events by December 31, 2016. That total now stands at $37,485.50 a month and a half later.
    7) 2016 Annual Fundraiser Clay Shoot at Creekwood on April 16, 2016 netted $2,452.88. Dance for the Dream netted $3,464.70. The Cut-a-thon $2,289.00, the garage sale netted $645.50, and Dream Catcher Christmas Open House added $426.64 on a cold, damp day.
    8) we have our first sustaining donor.
    9) we now have an outside attorney for the corporation - Baker Botts LLP - serving pro bono.

Funding Needs

Most immediate challenge is the $1,000,000 needed to purchase land for a permanent home. Our current home is a wetlands with no ability to construct and all weather structure due to a lease by suffrage on property owned by an investment group. In the process of searching for necessary funds we have verbal in-kind offers for site preparation, concrete, an electrician, a plumber, a welder, design of the solar electrical system, and the caretaker's residence. Through internal donations, garage sales, a cut-a-thon, a Chick-fil-A event, our Christmas Open House and a gift from our sustaining donor we have $37,485.50 in the bank toward our goal. A second real need is a truck that can pull a 5-horse slant gooseneck trailer. Approximate cost new $50,000. Used in good condition appreciated. Size similar to Ford 250 diesel, Chevy 2500, or Nissan with Cummins engine. Operating funds for 2017 are budgeted at $32,065 with that money in the bank.

We welcome any volunteer who can pass the criminal background check and welcome any person with disability or youth at risk who asks to be a part of our program. Our diversity plan is stated in our mission: We accept people "without regard to race, religion, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background." Actually we celebrate those who come to us from other cultures. We do ask that volunteers be at least 14 years of age. If younger, they are accepted on a case by case basis with their parent/guardian volunteering also. Participants must be at least 5 years of age for anatomical maturation reasons.
