Mission

Adventures in Caring was founded in 1985, and is best known for its award winning Raggedy Ann & Andy Visiting Program for patients in hospitals and nursing homes. Its all-volunteer team is specially trained in how to communicate with people who are critically or chronically ill. All year round, these volunteers bring encouragement, hope, and compassion to patients and their families. By reducing the emotional distress that often accompanies physical illness, they support the healing process. Adventures in Caring also teaches the art of communicating with compassion to volunteer caregivers, students, and health care professionals throughout the United States.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Compassion In Action Patient Care

Our
core program is Compassion in Action, a
program that trains volunteers, who then visit patients on a weekly, and often
daily, basis. Volunteers visit all ages, races, religions and cultures,
regardless of illness or injury. Most of our patients are frail, elderly, often
abandoned and mainly predominately female residents of skilled nursing
facilities; more than half have no surviving family or friends.

Eighty-five percent of volunteers are
college students pursuing healthcare careers. Most have part-time jobs, take
extra courses needed for medical school and have high GPAs. Through the Compassion
in Action service-learning program, they learn
the importance of compassionate healthcare and will take this education into
their healthcare professions.
