What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Schools3, in association with local communities and ministries of education, creates schools in Africa and Central America. Schools3 funds the construction of the schools, volunteers from the local communities (with help from a few paid, skilled laborers) build the schools, and the ministries of education provide, and pay for, the teachers and school supplies. These are public schools, owned by the local community. A typical school is a permanent, 3-room primary school (with an office and latrine facility). It is made with concrete blocks, has a metal roof and roof structure, and is beautifully plastered and painted inside and out. It is a primary school by day, a community center and adult school by night. With morning and afternoon sessions, it is a school for 200 children. Because of the very heavy volunteered commitment from the local community, building costs are kept very low. In Mali, the total cost is approximately US$17,000, including a maintenance fund (only US$85 per student space). In Honduras the same school costs US$22,000. Mar 2008 We have now built 25 schools in Mali, 4 school projects in Honduras, 1 school project in Lesotho, and two phases of a girls high school in India. One school is now being built in Honduras. Four more schools in Mali are funded and will be built in 2008.
