Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our focus is the holistic development of rural remote villages in India. Our first intervention is to bring basic literacy into the villages. We run single teacher schools in rural remote villages. Once the school is established and working well, we then add health services and skill development to bring economic opportunities for the villagers. Our long term goal is to ensure that the villagers have the resources to live healthy productive lives in the villages
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We have a tiered approach for transforming a village. Our first step is to go into a village and create a trusting relationship. We form a village committee that helps us bring Ekal to the village. Basic literacy is critical for development. Our first intervention is to run a single teacher school using a local youth as a teacher. We provide semi-annual training to the teachers. The second intervention is the area of health where we take local youth and train them to be health care providers. Our third intervention is skill training. Our focus is on Digital Literacy, tailoring and on improved farming techniques for better produce. If all are successful, the village is removed from the charity rolls of Ekal and becomes self-sustaining. The villagers at that time would have enough resources to support to the school and other services that Ekal provides.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our core strength is the large pool of over 800,000 volunteers from the villages and cities that help manage the various aspects of the organization. These volunteers know the local culture well and can take our core projects and customize them to suit local conditions. Our village volunteers help run the field operations while our city volunteers provide them with funds and required support. We also get thought leadership from leading organizations like IIT Bombay that has helped bring the latest technology to help leapfrog our efforts using the latest technology tools.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We currently run schools in over 80,000 rural remote villages teaching 2.2 Million Children. We have Mobile Computer Labs bringing education to remote villages. We also have health programs running in 6000 villages. Our Economic empowerment programs are impacting nearly 2000 villages. We also have 30% of the villages that are self-supporting.
Our goal is to have all programs run in 100,000 villages.
