For more than 15 years we have gone to 15 countries, executed more than 33 treatment centers missions and 84 surgical missions. We conducted over 8,202 surgical procedures on over 6,638 patients. Our amazing family is built from 869 volunteers including surgeons, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, anesthesiologists, pediatricians and more. Our treatment centers are for the purpose of training local health care providers innovative ways to treat cleft lip and pallet anomalies, all with the hope they will not need us in the future.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Cleft anomalies are one of the most common birth defects in the world. In countries where medical care can be almost a year's salary for the poorest, there is little if any opportunity to address this problem. Alliance for Smiles provides free surgeries for children around the world. We also have treatment centers and training programs where we train local providers to deliver comprehensive treatment and follow up care.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Medical Missions

Alliance for Smiles organizes and sends surgical teams to sites for two week missions. A surgical team is comprised of approximately 15 medical volunteers, supported by approximately 5 non-medical volunteers. During a mission 70 to 100 under-served children receive surgery for cleft lip & palate anomalies. The AfS team works side-by-side with local medical practitioners to exchange ideas on proper medical techniques and procedures, as well as to provide follow-up care.

AfS provides care to all patients, regardless of sex, age, economic status, educational background, race, color, ancestry, national origin, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity or marital status.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our goal is to forever improve the lives of children and communities impacted by cleft lip and palate by providing free comprehensive treatment, while building local capacity for long-term care.

Alliance for Smiles also helps to establish and maintain permanent centers to provide follow-up treatment and continuing care to children who have received surgery. The objectives and activities of the centers include dental treatment, speech therapy, parental education and psychological counseling.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel was impossible, we launched a Virtual Education Initiative to deliver training to our international partners remotely via online formats. We have provided training to medical professionals and students to enhance their ability to provide effective patient care.

Alliance for Smiles has hundreds of doctors and trained medical staff who provide treatment and training. We work with local international organizations, especially Rotary International, and partners on the ground in other countries to help support our work. We have never had a mission without sufficient supplies, staff, funds or resources.

We have established seven international treatment centers, worked in 15 countries and donated over $33,000,000 in medical services to children in need. We plan to continue to grow by moving into new countries and expanding our treatment centers while also training locals, both remotely and in person, to continue after we leave the country.
