Human Services -- Multipurpose and Other

Lifeforce in Later Years Inc

  • New York, NY

Mission Statement

At a time when families can live hours and days away from oldest relatives, when healthcare costs are high, when there are too few geriatricians across the land, when only the affluent can afford the cost of long term care, and when we live in a culture where ageism can lead to sub-optimal eldercare, LiLY supports the well-being of frail elders by raising awareness, leveraging resources, and offering free services through a corps of dedicated volunteers and partners.

LiLY's reach is national through its mentoring initiative and awareness campaign.

STATEMENT FROM THE Executive Director

" Since 2009, LiLY has been supporting the well-being of frail elders by raising awareness, leveraging resources, and offering free services through a corps of dedicated volunteers and partners. Its Morningside Village program in Morningside Heights in Manhattan has been nationally recognized for its success in helping elders to connect with community, with needed services and with new friends for life. It orchestrates what could best be termed "a good neighbor policy". Elders in the community are served free of charge and are supported in their wishes to remain int he homes they love as they age. The cost of serving each of elders served amounts to less than $800 per annum, or the cost of 1 and 1/3 days residence at a 5-star New York City nursing home facility. For her efforts, its founder, Irene Zola, became a "CNN Hero" in 2010, and in 2012 she was recipient of AARP's Inspire Award.
In addition to it is working with other groups who are forming informal elder-care projects, such as West Harlem Neighbors in Manhattan and Catskill Neighbors in upstate New York. LiLY published a free of charge online manual, offering guidelines for those wanting to start such an eldercare project of their own, and groups have been using them from New York to California.
LiLY had also been raising awareness through community education when it comes to the position of oldest neighbors in a culture where ageism flourishes. LiLY's launched its campaign in 2012 with its Love An Elder Day initiative. It chose October 1st, the day of the UN's International Day to Honor Older Adults", to raise awareness and to celebrate our oldest generation, using media, creating events, and working with partners, such as the New York City Board of Education, to promote Love An Elder Day, which in 2015 expanded to "Celebrate Our Elders Week" during the first week of October.
LiLY's Board of Directors is composed of health and business professionals and other generous contributors to the work of LiLY. For more, we invite you to visit out webpage at www.L-i-L-Y.org.
