BAY AREA URBAN DEBATE COMMISSION

Listen, Learn, Lead

aka Bay Area Urban Debate League (BAUDL)   |   Oakland, CA   |  http://www.baudl.org

Mission

The Bay Area Urban Debate League is dedicated to expanding opportunities for high school and middle school students in the San Francisco Bay Area to participate in rigorous academic competition and to become articulate and informed leaders in their schools and communities.

Notes from the nonprofit

We partner with schools throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to found debate teams and transform the lives of students that traditional classrooms fail to engage. Through our work we have reached hundreds of students across the Bay Area and have helped countless individuals reverse their trajectory from low expectations to high performance. The young people we serve are more than 95% students of color, and the great majority live in poverty. Nationally, less than half of low-income high school seniors make it to college, and rates are even worse in the under-resourced public schools we serve. In contrast, 96% of BAUDL seniors graduate high school and 86% go on to college.

After School Debate Program

BAUDL helps establish and provided ongoing support for full-fledged high school debate teams. A debate team typically consists of 6-40 students (depending on the size of the school and history of the team) who meet for a minimum of one 90 minute practice a week to prepare to attend debate tournaments. During practice, coaches will discuss current political, sociological, international, and economic events. Teams will devise strategies for arguing both the pro and con of topics, work on detailed, evidenced briefs, and practice public speaking. The Bay Area Urban Debate League runs a fully inclusive debate league which means we have many schools running independent programs in each high school.

In order to accomplish the task of managing an entire debate league, BAUDL provides:

Tournaments. The BAUDL runs five regular-season tournaments and one League Championship over the school year, bringing all member schools into intense and exhilarating competition in which students win trophies and gain applause based on the strength of their arguments, the research they have performed, and their strategic vision.

Workshops. The BAUDC develops and staffs six five-hour Saturday workshops per year for the young people it serves, supplementing team practices with rigorous skill development and fun activities.

Supporting materials. The BAUDL generates and gathers hundreds of pages of debate evidence, research guides, curricular documents, and classroom handouts to benefit its teams. All other core materials are included: paper, pens, notebooks. Students are ready to walk into debate rounds and compete.

Student Leadership Council extends the debate season for students who want more competitive opportunities than offered in the regular BAUDL league tournament calendar. Student Leadership Council consists of an additional weekly practice, three hours in length, with a professional/elite debate coach who takes the "team" to compete in an additional 10-14 regional and national tournaments a school year. The competition calendar includes tounaments hosted by Stanford and UC, Berkeley, as well has the California High School Speech and Debate Association circuit. TT students compete against the best and the brightest in California and the nation.

BAUDL provides travel opportunities to compete on college campuses all over the West Coast, along with a major national championship run annually. All costs associated with travel and lodging are covered by the league.

Student Leadership Council students are advanced debaters who need professional coaching, provided by BAUDL, program materials, such as laptops, dropbox, and microsoft office.

BAUDL offers 2 different Summer Institute Programs.

1. The Julia Burke Debate Institute is a one week immersion into speech & debate, taught by some of the best urban debate instructors in the country. Each summer, over 100 students come together to participate in 5 days of engaging, fast-paced learning through workshops and lectures led by accomplished debaters held in Oakland. Throughout the week, students learn and practice new techniques and then put those skills to the test in a tournament at the end of institute. The JBDI was founded in 2008 and now serves both high school and middle school youth; the week focuses on argumentation, advocacy, public speaking, and critical thinking skills. The JDBI search approximately 120 students each summer.

2. National Summer Debate Institute Scholarships. Summer debate institutes take place all over the country and provides advanced instruction for debaters looking to expand their argument knowledge and improve their speaking skills. Each summer, BAUDL provides the funding and support necessary to send 20 advanced debaters to national institutes. We are proud to be partnered with the Cal National Debate Institute and the Gonzaga Debate Institute, both long-time supporters of BAUDL youth.

Each summer institute ranges in length from 10 days to 4 weeks and provides a vast amount of information for debaters to take in. Debate institutes give students the chance to prepare for the upcoming debate season through in-depth research workshops and expert coaching from a diverse range of instructors and elite college debaters. The focused environment is ideal for students to practice and hone their debate skills.

Many BAUDL teachers begin to work with our program without knowledge of debate as a tool to educate. Debate is a practice, an art. Formal, competitive debate is a specialized art which requires training to master. BAUDL offers a wide array of curriculum created by teachers for teachers. Our activities are designed to teach debate fundamentals in an exciting way and can be easily modified to focus on specific topics or scaffolded to work with higher level students. BAUDL hosts up to six professional development sessions over the school year to help teacher-coaches become familiar with debate language and strategy. Each five hour session focuses in on a part of debate process and theory. As part of our commitment to praxis in education, BAUDL hosts a teacher-coach debate tournament so coaches can practice what they teach.
