Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The major operating programs include educational classes and exhibitions for children and adults of all ages. The permanent collection focuses on Western and Colorado art.
Exhibitions
The Art Center holds over 24 exhibitions every year. Several annual shows feature the work of local arts organizations like the Brush and Palette Club, the Western Colorado Watercolor Society, The Art Center Members Show, the Colorado Pastel Society, Mesa State College and the Altrusa High School and Middle School Show. Other exhibitions focus on particular mediums like wood, metal and clay or built around particular themes like portraiture. Several times a year an exhibit features the work of selected artists from across the country.
Adult art educational programs
The Art Center offers five sessions of educational programming for adults during the year. The offering include 2D and 3D programming. Both programs vary in medium and style. Throughout the year, workshops are also held with instructors from across the U.S. In 2009, over 700 students attended 76 session classes and nine workshops.
Children's arts education programs
The Art Center offers children's arts educational programs year round. During the school year, The Art Center has after school and homeschool programs. One week in April is called Spring Art Week featuring eight artists working in different mediums throughout the building. During that week, over 3,500 elementary school children visit with their classes to view the artists' work and return to the classroom with lesson plans for each medium. The Art Center also holds ten weeks of Summer Art Camp in the summer. Each week features a different theme, ie. Culture Week, Masters Week, Recycle Week. Both Spring Art Week and Summer Art Camp are over 30 years old.
First Fridays and Second Saturdays
The Art Center celebrates First Fridays every month opening new shows or having artists in the building demonstrating. Second Saturdays feature poetry readings, film discussions or some other cultural event.
