What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Since 1994, FTC has sent eighteen surgical teams to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam where they performed free facial surgeries at two oral and maxillo-facial surgery hospitals. FTC has provided some financial support for Vietnamese surgeons who go to remote provinces to do more facial & cleft lip and palate repair surgeries. FTC funded patients' families suffering loss from massive "Dragon" floods, Fall 2000, and a typhoon along the central coast, Fall 2007. And when opportunities arise, FTC extends care to orphans and destitute patients with whom they come in contact while traveling, including covering overland traveling and food expenses.
In 1997 and 2000 surgical teams also went to Shen Yang, Liao Ning Province, (NE) China where they performed surgeries. FTC donated surgical supplies, instruments, drills, and monitors in both countries. Patients come both from peasant families and orphanages. Also, in May 2005 FTC supported a Chinese Children Charities (CCC, www.chinesechildren.org) surgical team by giving them supplies and logistical support needed for their trip to Xining, in Qinghai Province, China. This team provided free cleft lip and palate surgeries for children from the region.
In June 2008 FTC also gave $11,000 in relief funds to CCC to help with the medical care among CCC orphans and the newly-orphaned in the Chengdu area of Sichuan Province. CCC Director, Dr. Joshua Zhong, traveled to this area personally to assess the damage and needs of the young victims.
Since FTC was founded ~1031 patients have benefited from free facial surgeries performed by FTC surgical teams and their associates. More information can be found in "For the Record" in the "About Us" Section" of our website: www.facethechallenge.org
Regarding a change for FACE the Challenge-Bolivia: Since 1993, FTC-Bolivia traveled inland from Sucre and Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where FTC-supported Belgian physicians, Drs. Rik & Sabine Celie, lived. They received & distributed medical supplies & treated the indigent Bolivians in 50 communities in the Andes Mountains & lowlands. As mutually agreed between FTC and the Celies, on 1 January 2006 the Celies established their own non-profit organization, Doctors on Mission, now independent of FACE the Challenge.
