Mission Statement

Summer Scholars is a community-based literacy initiative designed to improve the reading skills of elementary aged children in Northeast Denver. Summer Scholars began at one school in 1993 with twenty students. Cyndi Kahn, a Denver community activist, launched the program after talking with a teacher frustrated by being required to pass a student reading below grade level on to the next grade. Cyndi asked the teacher to think of options, short of repeating a grade, which might be able to boost the child's reading skill. The teacher's answer prompted the birth of Summer Scholars. Today, Summer Scholars has 20 partner schools and is expected to serve 1300 students in the 2001 summer school.
