As volunteers and within the capabilities of our equipment and training we are pledged to protect the people of the Big Elk Community from emergencies and natural disasters and to render assistance in the event of medical emergencies. Beyond the immediate safety of our neighbors, we also strive to protect the forests which surround us and the homes we live in

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Program 1

Structure fires included 3 minor fires in Big Elk and 1 larger fire at Pinewood Springs F.P.D. with whom we have mutual aid agreement. The biggest expense for this program is the training of 3 more fire fighters and purchasing proper protective equipement (P.P.E.) clothing, boots, helmets, etc. for them.

Our department responds to medical emergencies in homes, at motor vehicle accidents and search and rescue operations. Volunteers responded to 18 medical emergencies calls, 8 motor vehicle accidents with injuries, and 6 motor vehicle accidents without injuries. We also responded to 4 search and rescue operations.

Program 3

The location of our small community is vulnerable for wildland fires. There is a large unstructured camping area above our community and because there is no water available in that area many camp fires are left with hot embers or even with flames.One of our volunteers patrols the large area to put out any camp fire left hot. This past year was actually very quiet but we stil patrolled cardfully and put out about 10 camp fires
