Green Schools - Certification Program

In cooperation with the USGBC national's Center for Green Schools, the Green Schools committees within the Gulf Coast Chapter partner with local school districts to improve sustainable performance of school facilities. Sustainability has become a critical facility management goal for the Sarasota, Manatee, Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough and Polk County school districts. The Certification program leverages our network of green building professionals within the organization to serve the interests of our partners in surrounding school districts. The USGBC Chapter has cooperated with them in following activities since 2009: 1. Successfully led and implemented LEED Operation and Maintenance Certification project for Marlowe Elementary in Pasco County. 2. Organized and hosted all-day LEED charettes for Polk, Manatee and Sarasota County school districts in 2011 3. Conducted facility audit of plumbing, mechanical and lighting systems at Alta Vista Elementary in Polk County in 2012.

Population(s) Served

In cooperation with the USGBC national's Center for Green Schools, the Green Schools committees within the Gulf Coast Chapter partner with community organizations and school districts to facilitate school garden projects. School Gardens are a growing and maturing institution throughout the US, including the Chapter area. The School Garden program leverages our network of material suppliers, equipment installers, and professionals within the organization to facilitate new and existing school garden projects. The USGBC Chapter has cooperated in following activities: 1. Gocio Elementary School in Sarasota, 2012, in partnership with Slow Food Sarasota, Sarasota Master Gardeners, and IFAS. Enhancements to existing garden facilities through installation of an automated micro-irrigation system, mulch ground cover, and raised bed gardens. Plant materials are selected based upon a edible permaculture garden concept, with some inclusion of Florida Friendly species. 2. Muller Elementary Magnet School in Tampa, 2012. School garden project.
