Tonhon Health Clinic

Tonhon is a rural village that sits just outside of the city of M’bengue, two hours north of our regional office in Korhogo, Côte d’Ivoire. We estimate the village to have a little more than one thousand residents. Over the past several years, Randgold Resources Ltd. has been investing in a new goldmine about fifteen minutes away from Tonhon. This mine has significantly changed the social dynamics of the village; many people are immigrating in search of jobs, and the rise in employment is generating income for many of the families. As income and population rise throughout the village, the market environment is becoming more conducive for small business development.

But despite the modest rise in economic activity, most of the village remains stagnant in terms of health, education and jobs. There is only one functioning water pump shared by the entire village. The only school present is the small one we have built. Many people fall ill and die from malaria and other diseases. Children run around with bloated bellies and yellowing hair, signs of severe malnutrition. Excrement pollutes the ground because there are no toilets to store and treat human waste. These villagers face problems so taxing they cannot hope to resolve them within their means for generations. Our presence will ensure that they can overcome these problems swiftly and resourcefully.

We will build and equip a health clinic by July 30, 2010. The health clinic will include one waiting room, two consultation rooms, two treatment rooms, one pharmacy (shelves with medication), one laboratory, one maternity room, six sanitary latrines, two training rooms for community health literacy classes, two offices.
