What we aim to solve
1 in 4 women will experience abortion by age 45, according to the Guttmacher Institute. And the National Survey of Family Growth states 1 in 5 men will experience abortion through a partner's termination by the same age. Support After Abortion's nationally representative research studies show that 34% of women and 71% of men report adverse changes after abortion. Such changes include depression, anxiety, and grief. The majority of both women and men say they either looked for help or could have benefitted from talking to someone after their abortion experiences including 6 out of 10 women and 8 out of 10 men. Yet fewer than 2 out of 10 knew where to go for help. People who experienced emotional impacts and desire help included both those who self-identify as pro-choice and those who identify as pro-life. And they come from all walks of life. Support After Abortion is dedicated to growing awareness, inspiring compassion, and expanding capacity for emotional healing after abortion.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Support After Abortion is dedicated to healing people who have been impacted by abortion. We do this in two ways:
(1) We connect people who suffer after abortion(s) to the type of healing they desire.
(2) We equip healing providers by active leadership in creating, aggregating, and elevating abortion healing resources.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Support After Abortion strategies are based on our core values: inspire compassion, promote collaboration, and build capacity for abortion healing. We enhance awareness of the need and options for after abortion emotional support through education, social media, resource creation, speaking engagements, conferences, and more. We offer compassionate, genuine, options-based care for women and men who reach out for support through our After Abortion Line. We collaborate with healing providers and grow abortion healing capacity by equipping them with best practices and resources. Through our efforts, Support After Abortion is shifting the conversation to compassion and support for those impacted by abortion.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Support After Abortion is at the forefront of the abortion healing movement. Our dual focus on equipping healing providers and connecting women and men struggling after abortion to healing options uniquely positions us to meet the client healing needs. Our capabilities include:
Commissioning and publishing research on the impact of abortion on women and men
Curriculum and Resource Development - Our Keys to Hope and Healing introductory abortion healing program is available for women and men, in Spanish and English, in religious and secular versions. Our Unraveled Roots: Exposing the Hidden Causes of Damaging Behaviors program helps individuals identify the root causes behind damaging behaviors and patterns to change their life and legacy by establishing new, healthier patterns one small step at a time. We also create client and provider focused educational and awareness resources.
Facilitator Coaching Program - Our one-on-one coaching model equips leaders who wish to provide virtual introductory abortion healing.
National Abortion Healing Referral Directory - Our directory offers the option for people seeking help after abortion to independently find providers and healing options. This is one way we meet the desire for anonymity that is shared by more than two-thirds of survey respondents. Our directory benefits providers by enabling them to connect with clients seeking after abortion support, receive referrals from other professionals, and make referrals for clients who desire healing options they dont currently offer.
Abortion Healing Provider Webinars - Monthly free webinars designed to share the latest insights related to abortion healing. Includes a dedicated speaker, presentation, and Q&A.
Provider Training Center - Offers providers access to self-directed training with options for certification.
Speakers Bureau - Support After Abortion staff and key volunteers present virtual and in-person trainings, grow awareness, and bring our message of hope and healing to conferences, events, podcasts, webinars, and organizations.
After Abortion Line - Our trained support team provides compassionate, confidential care to women and men seeking help after their abortion experiences. We have a referral network of providers and a process to connect people with the kind of support that best meets their needs.
Focus on Client-Centered Healing - We meet clients where they are and together determine what type of healing works best for them - for their schedule, beliefs, and type of care desired. This may be one-on-one or group, virtual or in-person or self-guided, clinical or peer-led, secular or religious, etc.
Client Healing Center - Offers individuals and support groups access to stories, videos, and self-guided resources for healing.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Support After Abortion started in 2016 as an idea when our Founder, Janine Marrone, heard a woman speak about the emotional pain of her abortion experience and felt the desire to serve people hurting after abortion. It began with one part-time staff member in a pregnancy center exploring what after-abortion healing programs were available in south Florida and then offering local in-person healing programs with a team of volunteers. We then commissioned nationally-representative research to better understand the impact and needs of women and men who experience abortion. The results revealed needs that become the core values of Support After Abortion: inspire compassion, promote collaboration, and build capacity for abortion healing.
What we learned in these early years was that people impacted by abortion were being unserved (82% didn't know where to go for help) and underserved (if they knew where to go, they typically found a one-size fits all program - in-person small groups with a religious focus). Yet our research revealed that a majority of people impacted by abortion wanted to remain anonymous and preferred non-faith, options-based support. Being a clearinghouse for clients - helping them identify the type of care they desire and then connecting them with a provider who can meet their needs is the first key focus of Support After Abortion. The second is equipping providers and creating resources to fill gaps (such as developing secular abortion-healing resources and virtual healing groups) in order to meet those options-based needs of women and men struggling after abortion.
Becoming an independent 501(c)3 organization in 2020, Support After Abortion established the After Abortion Line, offering compassionate and confidential care through various communication channels. The organization developed an introductory abortion healing program and authored "Unraveled Roots: Exposing the Hidden Causes of Damaging Behaviors," complemented by videos, journals, and training materials. Additional initiatives include a coaching program, virtual conferences, monthly webinars, and a National Abortion Healing Referral Directory. The organization reached over 150,000 people through events and trained over 100,000 individuals.
With the awareness, national recognition, and credibility we have achieved, Support After Abortion is a catalyst leading a global change in thinking and best practices for abortion healing. As we continue to expand healing for the millions of people who are searching and wanting help to heal from abortion, we will be unveiling Unraveled Roots for Men, providing Continuing Education Credits for clinicians, launching a residential treatment model pilot program, and developing a community ambassador program. We will forge our collaborative energy to create a tidal wave of lasting change for men, women, and families across the world.
