CCNS Programs

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is located in north central New Mexico, approximately 25 miles northwest of Santa Fe. For over 75 years, LANL has emitted radionuclides and other hazardous and toxic materials into the air, water and soil during the research, development and production of nuclear weapons. CCNS provides credible information about the impacts to public health and the environment to surrounding communities to encourage civic engagement in the public processes to address these impacts.

Monitoring Air Emissions, Water Discharges and Waste - Through its environmental monitoring programs, CCNS scrutinizes radioactive and hazardous emissions to air and discharges to surface and ground water from LANL and their impacts to drinking water CCNS also monitors radioactive and hazardous waste generation, treatment and disposal at LANL and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). It also reviews and provides comments about Department of Energy (DOE) proposals with implications for New Mexico, such as the consolidated interim storage facilities (Holtec and Waste Control Specialists).

Environmental Health and Cleanup - By reviewing and providing comments about proposed cleanup plans submitted by LANL to the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), CCNS ensures protection of precious surface, ground and drinking water resources and public and environmental health.

Public Education and Outreach - Through its Media Network, CCNS produces a weekly radio program, maintains a website, and utilizes social media to get the word out CCNS also creates and distributes public education materials, such as reports, fact sheets and sample comment letters.

Weapons Program - CCNS monitors DOE plans to expand nuclear weapons production and construct and operate new facilities for such activities in New Mexico.

In all of our work, CCNS adheres to the principles of Environmental Justice.
