Communities In Schools Site Coordinators (our key program) accomplish success and fulfill CIS's goals by bringing a 'wrap-around framework' with its proven effectiveness and power into partner schools. We provide three distinct tiers of service to so support schools, students and their families. We work with CIS trained volunteers and tutors, health care partners and local, community social service and youth agencies to provide students with resources they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. Differentiating support levels enables us to support the student body as a whole and also focus on targeted students who have more significant, often sever, needs. In CIS's four years of service, 95% of students served have promoted to the next grade level ensuring more students are staying in school and on a positive path to graduation.

CIS has twelve Site Coordinators in ten public school providing a combination of school-wide and individual student supports. The Site Coordinators work to mitigate the poverty-related challenges facing students that undermine their ability to succeed in school.

  1. What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
    Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation's most effective drop out prevention organization (Child Trends, 2013). CIS of New Mexico's overarching objective is to ensure every Santa Fe student stays in school and graduates. The barriers that keep kids from staying in school and graduating are numerous and widespread. Some are easy to spot, like academic problems or homelessness. But many others are less obvious - bullying, untreated medical or dental issues, or lack of school supplies and clothes. Communities In Schools of Mexico is dedicated to helping identify and remove any and all barriers for the students we serve so they can stay in school and succeed in life.

    Today, New Mexico has the lowest national graduation rate in the nation based on a 2016 Building a Grad Nation survey showing that 68.5% of the state's high school students earned a diploma - well below the 82.3% national average (Albuquerque Journal, May 13, 2016). Our work seeks to ensure that every student with whom we work is able to show up at school, stay in school and graduate to a career or college to ensure a positive and productive life.

    According to the 2016 Annie Casey Foundation's 'Kids Count Report,' "Growing up in poverty is one the greatest threats to healthy child development." Also, according to the 'Kids Count Report,' New Mexico continues to rank 49th for overall child well-being based on the percentage of children living in poverty (30%). 21% of families living in Santa Fe live in poverty (Santa Fe County, 2013). Poverty is the leading factor contributing to a young person's ability to show up at school rested, nourished and ready to learn. School staff are overwhelmed by the impact that unmet basic needs (food, shelter, clothing, access to medical care) and the corresponding low academic performance, behavioral issues, truancy and parental issues have on their student's ability to engage and learn. In order for teachers to successfully teach, children must be in a position to learn. This is where CIS steps in.
  2. What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
    We accomplish and meet our goals by implementing CIS's evidence-based, Integrated Student Support (ISS) system providing a differentiated three-tiered support structure to mitigate obstacles that often lead a young person to drop out of school. Each designated Tier is designed to focus resources and supports on a particular population based on the intensity of need. Tier 1 Supports address school-wide challenges such as attendance and truancy issues. Tier 2 Supports involve case management for small groups of students challenged by one specific issue such as bullying or social/emotional development. With Tier 2 services and supports, CIS staff facilitate bringing community programs and resources into schools to work with the students. For example, at many of the schools at which we work bullying among girls is a common issue. Girls Inc delivers a long-term comprehensive anti-bullying curriculum that addresses building strong life skills and social emotional learning. Tier 3 supports involve long-term sustained one-on-one case management for those children, youth and families facing a range of challenges most often brought about by poverty. In this work we make home visits to meet the family and to understand their challenges across a broad spectrum. In several cases elementary school children have stopped attending school leading to a concern about the child's well being. A home visit revealed that the single parent was keeping the older child at home to 'baby-sit' younger siblings. Once we understood the reason, we were able to work with the single parent to find quality, affordable child care. The parent was able to get to work and the student was able to return to school. Working closely with school leadership and each school's Wellness Team, the CIS Site Coordinator's develop school-wide School Support Plans and individual Student Support Plans designed to address and mitigate the specific challenges facing a school and the highest need and most vulnerable students.During the 2015-2016 school year, CIS of New Mexico served 5,200 unduplicated students. Our case managed students (10% of each school's total student population) totaling 535 - received more intensive support throughout the school year. We have found that our long-term, comprehensive case-managing support for individual students has ensured more students are showing up at school nourished, rested and ready to engage in learning.
  3. What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
    CIS of New Mexico is a part of a 40-year old non-profit network, Communities In Schools. As a state-affiliate of Communities In Schools, CIS of New Mexico is required to meet a broad range of expectations and responsibilities. Communities In Schools maintains a network-wide Total Quality System (TQS) to ensure every affiliate maintains the highest standards of quality and accountability. Business and program standards are explicitly outlined and each affiliate is required to meet and maintain all standards. In 2016, CIS of New Mexico became a fully accredited CIS Affiliate based on a rigorous organizational review and audit of all facets of the organization - day to day operations, fiscal management, fundraising, and program delivery and outcomes.

    Our team of 15 professional staff and 14 board members is comprised of seasoned and accomplished professionals and community and state leaders all deeply committed to supporting the educational success and well-being of our community's children, youth and families.
  4. How will they know if they are making progress?
    Communities In Schools is uses an evidence-based framework while deeply committed to forging meaningful and effective relationships with our students, school staff, partners and families. Our evidence illustrates the specific data driven outcomes across five key indicators - academics, attendance, behavior, basic needs and parent engagement. Our strong and successful and genuine relationships with our network of people demonstrate the trust and faith people place in our team.

    Our 2015-2016 school year outcomes reveal important information about student success and the strategies utilized to ensure success. 95% of our case-managed students were promoted to the next grade level. 95% of case manages students met their academic goal. 83% met their behavior goal. 75% met their attendance goal. 100% of CIS students received some form of basic needs support. For example, CIS staff distributed 121,000 POUNDS of fresh/perishable food (donated to CIS by the Food Depot) to 1,095 families during the 2015-2016 school year.
  5. What have and haven't they accomplished so far?
    So far, we have forged a strong partnership with the Santa Fe Public Schools our primary partner. We have forged strong partnerships with each of the principals at the schools we serve. We have established strong partnerships with close to 50 community organizations - social service and youth development agencies - that have come to depend on CIS to bring their work and services to children while at school. Our partnerships ensure that students and families can be supported - consistently, efficiently and effectively. We have grown from serving two school to now nine schools in three years. We have still to raise the funds to enable us to serve more students.

She brings 25 years of non-profit management, resource development and education program development expertise to her work with CIS along with a deep commitment to educational equity and social justice for all.
