The Cheechakos Project is a celebration and exploration of early Anchorage through music, film, photographs, and historical documents with emphasis on the first full length motion picture filmed entirely in Alaska.

Produced in 1923 by Austin Cap Lathrop's Alaska Moving Pictures Corporation, the silent film "The Cheechakos" was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2003. Despite this recognition, very few Alaskans have even heard of the film and fewer yet are aware of the important role it played in this period of early Anchorage history.

The Anchorage Fine Arts Society's Cheechakos Project will create and use a variety of media and events to tell the story of early Anchorage and the making of The Cheechakos. The project will reintroduce the film and the era to Anchorage audiences. The Cheechakos Project will create:
--a public screening of "The Cheechakos" film with the world premiere of a newly created, historically based film sore performed live by the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra;
--public screenings of silent film "newsreels" created using period photographs, archival newspaper articles, and film clips all depicting Anchorage's first ten years (1915-1924), along with Buster Keaton's comedy short "The Frozen North";
--a digital media presentation about the making of The Cheechakos. The will include original
photographs, clips from the motion picture, images from historical newspapers and magazines, along with interesting anecdotes that transpired during the making of the film;
--a website containing extensive historical research and definitive information about the "The Cheechakos." This website will contain primary source material, e.g. archival newspaper and magazine articles, period photographs, diary excerpts, biographical information on the cast and
Anchorage film producers, and film clips; and
-- a portable "Cheechakos Project" exhibit for display in locations around the city, featuring live performances by musicians playing popular music of the day.

The Anchorage Fine Arts Society will commission a nationally recognized expert in silent film music to create an orchestral score for The Cheechakos and The Frozen North films, and will engage a scholar on historic American music to select and provide period sheet music for live performance to accompany the newsreels and portable exhibit.
