Mission

The mission of the Tacoma Urban League is to assist African Americans, culturally diverse minorities, economically disadvantaged individuals and families in the achievement of social equality and economic independence. The Tacoma Urban League mission is to tackle community issues through programs in education, social justice, advocacy, and economic development.

Male Involvement Program

Education & Youth Programs: Ensuring that our children are well educated and equipped for economic self-reliance in the 21st century. Students participates in supervised academic enrichment activities. Our Male Involvement Program (MIP), provides a safe environment in which students receive on going support, skill enhancement, and problem solving. Students learn how to set and achieve goals; Identify and build upon latent skills. MIP incorporates motivation techniques that help students use the skills they learn; seek and develop opportunities for success. Through teamwork, students are challenged in areas of accountability, responsibility, leadership, ownership, and independence.

Supporting Black-owned businesses helps the community to thrive, and now Tacoma Urban League's Black Empowerment Center is making finding these businesses easier than ever. The Center helps to improve and protect the economic security of African-Americans in the Tacoma Pierce County area by enhancing asset-building services, improving policy advocacy, and increasing leadership capacity.

Our Home Ownership Program helps community members achieve and sustain successful home ownership through a variety of classes, workshops, one-to-one coaching, and support.

The Black Parents Alliance works within the community to discuss relevant topics, gain information, and make decisions to improve the education of children; advocate for policies that improve the intellectual, social, and emotional success of African-American scholars and families

In partnership with Sisterhood in the City, Girls with Purpose students receive mentoring from women to empower young (middle and high school age) girls of color to succeed as productive citizens, both scholastically and in all aspects of their personal life.

Sisterhood in the City is an all-girls program that combines positive adult female mentoring with group activities and a structured curriculum that helps to empower young women of color It's target audience is middle school-aged girls between 11-14 years old.
