Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Job Training
A volunteer at The Boiler Room works a four hour shift, of which there are four in a business day. During this time they serve customers, make coffee and espresso, and are expected to do a series of shift duties. Those shift duties include all the basic operations of a "real” food service business, from taking down chairs in the morning to putting them up in the evening. A standard of cleanliness must be met during each shift. There are dishes to do, tables to wipe, and the bathroom must be cleaned.
Following are the skills our volunteer baristas are expected to learn:
• Basic coffee and espresso making skills
• Basic cash register operation (including counting back correct change and filling in a till sheet)
• Correct food handling and basic food safety and sanitation techniques (via the food handler's permit class)
• Basic customer service and phone etiquette
• The importance of cleanliness, punctuality, and accountability
• Basic cooking and baking skills
• Ask for help when needed
• How to interact appropriately with a diverse and changing population, including the homeless, tourists, business owners and other staff
Coordinators, hired from the volunteer staff, learn the above skills, as well as skill sets specific to their position. We currently have on staff a volunteer coordinator, a kitchen coordinator and a music and programs coordinator. All our volunteers and coordinators also learn to advocate for others who are in need.
Free Food
The Boiler Room has free food available every day, serving 19,432 meals to the community in 2016. Food is donated by the community, and organic fresh vegetables come from local farms. A hot meal–usually soup–is provided on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Sunday Soup is a 20-year tradition of The Boiler Room, with five local churches rotating the preparation.
Through the Wall
A collaborative project of The Boiler Room and our neighbor, Northwind Arts Center, Through The Wall provides visual art instruction from local artists, such as Melissa Bixby and Nhatt Nichols, to folks from The Boiler Room’s extended community. The program fosters a collaborative relationship between Northwind and The Boiler Room as neighbors in the community, through our adjoining wall, and supports young and emerging visual artists. It is Northwind Arts Center’s mission to foster arts appreciation and education in the community, and it is in The Boiler Room’s mission to provide growth opportunities to the community–this partnership ensures both organizations’ goals while building a community in which non-profits mutually benefit.
Adulting
Community members and the Port Townsend Public Library are partnering with The Boiler Room to teach “mini classes” on everything you need to know as an adult that school never taught you. This program features everything from “How to snake a drain” to “How to find a house and carefully read your new lease.”
Music
The Boiler Room hosts live music performances–of all genres–on Fridays and Saturdays. All shows are all ages and free! Keep an eye on the events page and/or facebook for a list of upcoming shows. A partnership with Centrum allows us to be a free, all-ages venue for their nationally renowned Blues Festival. Additionally, there is a weekly Open Mic.
Hygiene Supply Bank
We accept unopened and opened (as long as it’s not something applied directly to the body–so no open deodorant, for example) hygiene supplies for distribution to the community. Over 6,000 individual hygiene supplies were distributed in 2016.
