Mission

Our mission is "to promote self-sufficiency and life-long learning by nurturing personal, educational and career development of young people." The Youth Employment Institute began in February of 1985 as a direct service program of The Private Industry Council. YEI provides economic opportunities to youth residing in Portland and by offering an integrated approach to employment, education and training services, and by filling the gaps that present barriers to youth seeking living wage jobs. YEI youth are typically at risk of dropping out of, or have dropped out of, high school. Many have learning disabilities or basic skills deficiencies, others have involvement with gangs and the juvenile justice system. Over sixty percent are youth of color.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

YEI Programs

YEI started by offering two distinct programs, a GED completion program and an employment and training program that utilized an integrated curriculum. In the last six years, YEI has grown from an organization serving 200 youth in two programs to an organization serving nearly 700 youth in 6 programs. YEI also offers an early childhood development program for children of teen parents who attend YEI in a state-certified child care facility. YEI's program strategy now incorporates GED completion, employment and training competencies, drop-out prevention services, year round work experience, post secondary entry options, graffiti removal services, on-site child care, parenting curriculum, drug and alcohol assessment and mental health services. A Department of Human Services liaison works onsite to track the high volume of teen parents at YEI.
