Mission

The Kilung Foundation's purpose is to promote the spread of Tibetan Buddhism by supporting the work of H.E. Dza Kilung Tulku Jigme Rinpoche, the fifth incarnation of Jigme Ngotsar Gyatso of Dzachuka, Kham, in east Tibet. The scope of Rinpoche's work includes overseeing and rebuilding the 18th century Kilung Monastery in Dzachuka, and answering the call to teach Buddhism in the West and other parts of Asia. Additionally, the Foundation supports community projects in Dzachuka, such as schools for nomad children, building a bridge, disaster relief.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

In eastern Tibet, the Kilung Foundation completed rebuilding the monastic college at Kilung Monastery which previously held 300 monks and was destroyed in 1959. Also slated for support are rebuilding the monastery's retreat center, improvements for the nuns at their center, building housing for the monks, and renovations of the original 18th C. temple. The Dzachuka region, like most remote parts of Tibet, is in great need of support for community projects. The Foundation completed three: the building of a bridge across the Dza River which thousands of nomads need to cross twice every summer; and two schools for nomad children. We have supplied relief funds for a snow disaster; developing a demonstration traditional Tibetan architecture house/center; sustainable economic herb project; and a medical clinic for the nomad area. Outside of Tibet, the Foundation supports the teaching of Buddhism by Kilung Monastery's head lama, Kilung Tulku Jigme Rinpoche. Because there is a large contingency in the West and other Asian countries that seek authentic teachers of Tibetan Buddhism, Kilung Rinpoche accepted invitations and now teaches in Washington state, Boston, Colorado, and in China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Denmark.
