BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ROWING
Rowing Changes Lives
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The sport of rowing has 100 years of rich history in the greater Seattle area, most notably at the University of Washington (The Boys in the Boat) but also in the many local clubs that provide opportunities to participate. However, on the west side of Puget Sound, particularly the Kitsap Peninsula, the sport has been limited by a lack of permanent facilities. Bainbridge Island Rowing (BIR), founded by a small group of high school students, parents, and adult rowers in 2001, has contributed greatly to the growth of rowing on the Peninsula, supplying leadership, expertise, example, training, and equipment, in addition to hosting rowing events and providing essential support to other clubs. Our vision is to be a regional rowing hub, giving access to this wonderful sport for a broader spectrum of communities and individuals both on our home island and in the greater West Sound area. To this end, we are engaged in a development campaign to construct the Stan Pocock Legacy Rowing Center.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Pursuant to our motto “Rowing Changes Lives”, our goals are to
• Support and encourage the sport of rowing, with its physical, psychological, social, and athletic benefits to the people of Bainbridge Island and the greater community of Kitsap County;
• Provide rowing, training, and related programs for teenagers and adults, novice and experienced rowers, from Bainbridge Island and across Kitsap County;
• Provide coaching and education for rowers, coxswains, and others interested in rowing;
• Train for and compete in local, regional, and national rowing competitions;
• Encourage and assist other rowing organizations in order to bring local rowing opportunities to a broad spectrum of residents of the West Sound area.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
• Maintain a strong juniors rowing program as a sport at Bainbridge and other area high schools. Our program is regularly the most popular local year-round sport by number of athletes.
• Maintain a strong masters program for adult rowers from Bainbridge Island & Kitsap County. Our sculling and sweep rowing programs are popular with both men & women aged 24 to 84.
• Conduct frequent Learn-to-Row classes and Summer Camps to introduce people to the sport.
• Work with other West Sound rowing organizations (Kitsap Rowing Association, Clam Island Rowing, S. Kitsap High School Rowing) to conduct events and to support them with advice, encouragement, expertise, equipment, and training.
• Support graduating juniors who pursue rowing in college, assisting their applications through advice and contacts to join our alumni at more than 50 leading US colleges and universities.
• Support all who require financial aid, so that no one is excluded from rowing due to need.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
As the oldest and largest rowing organization in the West Sound, BIR has the equipment, leadership, participation, support, and passion to meet our goals. Our coaches are superb (including Olympic and collegiate rowers); we have an active all-volunteer board composed of rowers and juniors parents; we have equipment to handle 100 rowers on the water; we have a good reputation in the local community and a high level of enthusiasm among our participants; and we enjoy excellent relationships with regional rowing groups. We believe our commitment to the multigenerational aspects of the sport is a great strength and source of vitality, leveraging the energy of teenagers, the focus and enthusiasm of their parents, and the long-term view and steady contributions of masters rowers to form an organization that is vibrant and healthy. A completed boathouse will provide a strong base of operations and greatly improve our capabilities for training, maintenance, and stewardship of our resources.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
BIR has grown into a community sports organization with 200+ members. We have broadened our reach into the larger Kitsap community through Learn-to-Row opportunities for adults and camps for juniors. BIR has successfully introduced more than 1,000 West Sound residents to a sport with a variety of benefits for both individuals and the community at large.
We have gone from struggling to enter local regattas to winning them, and sustained success at the regional and national levels. Our student athletes have gone on to compete at 50+ US colleges, & many have returned to Bainbridge to help nurture rowers of all ages.
Through a partnership with the City of Bainbridge Island and the generous support of our members and the Kitsap County community, $1.8M has already been raised to complete Phase 1 of construction of the Stan Pocock Legacy Rowing Center. Stage 2 will complete a new regional hub for rowing in the West Sound, so it is drawing even more support from a wider circle of donors.
