WATER STATION

Help us save lives

aka WATER STATION   |   Escondido, CA   |  http://waterstations.org/

Mission

We have the single-minded mission of preventing heat related deaths in the remote desert regions of Imperial County, CA, by placing and maintaining an array of water stations there. Our mission is strictly humanitarian in nature and does not include political advocacy of any kind; our passion is saving human lives.

Notes from the nonprofit

We are occasionally challenged by individuals who believe we are encouraging or abetting immigrants entering the U.S. illegally. I would like to reiterate that we are not an advocacy group nor a political one. Immigrants do not cross the border for a free gallon jug of water; we only "aid" them in keeping them alive. We do not condone unlawful behavior but it is not our duty to enforce laws. Our only purpose is to prevent human beings, regardless of nationality, from dying in the desert.

Place, repair and replenish water stations

From April through October each year we place blue plastic barrels containing between 6-12 one-gallon jugs of water to aid lost or stranded desert travelers. These stations are marked with a brightly colored flag, and are subject to permits from and memoranda of understanding with controlling land-use agencies.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We plan to continue maintaining our array of 150 water stations in Imperial County, CA, to reduce heat-related human deaths. We have been contacted by new organizations with similar aims in Arizona and Texas, and we plan to continue assisting them to implement our system in their big-risk areas.

We rely solely on volunteers to place and maintain our water stations, and on institutional and individual donations to meet our operating expenses. We occasionally host student groups who assist us in our efforts. We maintain contact with the Border Patrol and local law enforcement agencies to track the number and location of fatalities in our area of operations.

We have a core of ten long-time volunteers whom we can rely on to donate two Saturdays each month for the maintenance of our stations.
