Oregon Green Schools Summit

Our annual Oregon Green Schools Summit brings together over 400 representatives from certified Green Schools from across the state.  There, students and staff celebrate their achievements, learn, share and network. They come away inspired and energized to undertake even greater resource conservation activities than before on their campuses and in their communities

Population(s) Served

Regional coordinators located across the state help schools conduct waste audits, provide guidance and training in new resource conservation practices, offer curriculum and recommend grant possibilities. Coordinators facilitate the recognition of schools at three distinct levels – Green, Merit or Premier – based on a school’s accomplishments.

Our program stresses both education and environmental preservation. Schools become certified as entry level Green Schools after students complete a waste audit of their school, identifying resource usage (i.e., electricity, water, natural gas, oil), describing programs already in place, setting resource conservation goals, and planning for maintenance of the program. Schools can attain Merit Green School status and go beyond the basic level by increasing conservation efforts and providing assistance to another school. At the highest level of recognition in the Green Schools program, the Premier level, schools complete a community outreach project in addition to building on Green and Merit levels.

Population(s) Served

An Incentive Awards Program welcomes new schools to Oregon Green Schools. Last year $5,000 in incentives was presented to 10 new Oregon Green Schools or to those moving up from one certification level to the next.
Sponsorship for this program for the past several years has come from Oregon DEQ.
