What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the Y, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.
FOR HEALTHY LIVING
In communities across the nation, the Y is a leading voice on health and well-being. With a mission centered on balance, the Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests.
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Y has been listening and responding to our communities’ most critical social needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Youth Development
With so many demands on today’s families and the increased focus on early brain development, families need all the support they can get to nurture the potential of youth. That’s why child care and early learning programs at the Y focus on holistically nurturing child development by providing a safe and healthy place to learn foundational skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build self-reliance through the Y values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Afterschool Care: Y afterschool programs serve kindergartners through middle schoolers with a variety of programmatic and activity options to explore and develop their interests and talents.
Child Watch: Many Ys offer free drop-in child care while mom or dad make use of the Y.
Youth and Government: YMCA Youth in Government is a national program of the Y that involves thousands of teens nationwide in state-organized, model-government programs. The program culminates with teens serving as delegates at their state conference, debating bills on the floor of the legislature.
Camp: Overnight, day or specialty camps at the Y share one thing: they’re about discovery. Kids have the opportunity to explore nature, find new talents, try new activities, gain independence, and make lasting friendships and memories. And, of course, it’s fun too.
Healthy Living
Because we know that healthy lifestyles are achieved through nurturing mind, body and spirit, well-being and fitness at the Y is so much more than just working out. Beyond fitness facilities, we provide educational programs to promote healthier decisions, and offer a variety of programs that support physical, intellectual and spiritual strength.
Group Physical Activity Classes: Ys offer classes for all ages, all levels and all interests. From low-impact exercise and chair classes, stretching and strength training to indoor cycling, water exercise, and yoga, you’ll find a group class that’s fun, supportive and keeps you moving.
Healthy Lifestyles: Living healthy is about spirit, mind and body at every age and stage. Ys offer classes and programs for those dealing with chronic disease, joint and injury rehabilitation, stress and pregnancy, in addition to health assessments and wellness coaching.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence as a nonprofit. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to support and give back to the communities we engage.
Swimming and Water Safety: Young people in underserved communities often do not learn the critical water safety and swimming skills to keep them safe, which results in a disproportionate amount of deaths and injuries each year. The Y is working to address this important issue by offering learn-to-swim programs and raising awareness of the importance of water safety in urban communities nationwide.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. That’s because in communities across Silicon Valley, we have the presence and partnerships to both promise and deliver lasting personal and social change.

• The Y brings people together. We connect people of all ages and backgrounds to bridge the gaps in community needs.
• The Y nurtures potential. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
• The Y has local presence and national reach. We mobilize local communities to effect lasting, meaningful change.
Anchored in neighborhoods throughout Silicon Valley, the Y believes that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our community. Every day our impact is felt when a mentor inspires a child, when an individual makes a healthy choice, and when the community comes together for the common good.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In 2018, the YMCA of Silicon Valley made sure that every child and teen counts by ensuring that 168,701 youth thrived, by learning and growing in a vast array of Y programs and activities.
• 3,045 teens and young adults developed leadership skills and enhanced self-confidence while helping others
• 11,260 children participated in educational enrichment programs
• 16,459 attended a day or overnight camp
We made sure that every family and individual counts by serving 262,522 youth, adults and seniors as Y members and program participants.
• 10,828 children, teens and adults learned swimming skills
• 5,296 youth developed skills and teamwork in youth spots programs
• 31,049 families enjoyed Y activities together
We made sure that every good deed counts by raising $6,280,000 of charitable gifts, which provided thousands of individuals and families affordable access to Y programs and services.
• 8,176 volunteers devoted time and energy to serve others as board members, fundraisers and program leaders
• 12,139 donors gave generously to the Y to help those in need
• 798,536 healthy meals and snacks were served through Y programs and community partnerships to fight hunger
