Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Berkeley Curbside Recycling

Ecology Center has been recycling in Berkeley since 1973. We were the first in the state of California to operate a curbside recycling program and one of the first in the country! We are one of the few nonprofit recycling collectors still operating today. We provide curbside recycling service to single family residences and all apartment buildings in Berkeley with 9 units or fewer.

The Ecology Center has operated certified farmers' markets in Berkeley since 1987. Farmers' markets are festive, family-friendly, open-air marketplaces where California farmers bring fresh, locally-grown fruits, nuts, vegetables, and farm-processed foods to sell directly to consumers.

Population(s) Served

The Ecology Center provides information on a wide range of environmental issues from toxics to composting to activism. We are available to answer questions over the phone, via e-mail, or on a walk-in basis. Our staff handles questions on a wide range of issues. If we are unable to answer a question ourselves, we can usually make a referral. We also participate in over a hundred community events each year. Our participation varies from co-hosting and leading interactive workshops to tabling and providing environmental information.

The Ecology Center’s Youth Environmental Academy (YEA) is a green leadership development program for young people ages 14-22. YEA provides structured, paid internships to youth at our headquarters in West Berkeley.

Through programming based on the nationally acclaimed Roots of Success curriculum, youth will emerge with content knowledge across the following areas: 1) Health, Food Systems, Food Justice, and Sustainable Agriculture, 2) Alternative Energy, 3) Climate Change, 4) Water Conservation, and 5) Waste Management and Recycling.

Through guided, hands-on projects led by professionals, youth will also gain job skills that will prepare them for green careers. YEA participants “earn and learn” while moving to positions of greater responsibility and leadership – from Youth Scholars to Youth Interns to Youth Program Assistants. The ultimate outcome is a new generation of environmentally conscious community leaders!

Population(s) Served

Farm Fresh Choice is the Ecology Center’s food justice program that engages low-income East Bay residents in reclaiming their optimal health through youth empowerment, nutrition education, and weekly produce stands. We make fresh, organic, regionally grown, and culturally appropriate foods convenient and affordable. Adult mentors and teen leaders facilitate peer-education workshops that raise critical health awareness. We’re Bringing Healthy Back!

Population(s) Served

Market Match is California’s healthy food incentive program, which matches customers’ federal nutrition assistance benefits, like CalFresh and WIC, at farmers’ markets. The program empowers low-income customers to make healthy food choices and benefits hundreds of small and mid-size California farmers.

Led by the Ecology Center, it is offered at more than 230 farmers’ markets across the state, in collaboration with 30 regional community-based organizations and farmers’ market operators

Population(s) Served

Ecology Center contributes to the coordination of several environmental justice coalitions and alliances including the Berkeley Climate Action Coalition, California Alliance of Farmers' Markets and Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Panel of Experts.
