What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
BACR Direct Services
BACR's direct services are organized into program groups (aka industries), which have a similar focus and common participant outcomes. These industries serve children, youth, families, and other adults in seven Bay Area counties and numerous communities and schools (grades K-12). Direct services are provided in each of the following program industries:
AFTER SCHOOL--BACR's school-based programs provide safe and enriching after-school opportunities to young people where they can learn to be productive, build positive adult and peer relationships, and participate in meaningful academic and enrichment activities. BACR is the lead agency for more than 50 after-school programs in Oakland, Richmond,San Francisco, East Palo Alto, and Marin. BACR also serves as fiscal intermediary of after-school programs for several school districts.
ALCOHOL AND DRUG, TOBACCO, and MENTAL HEALTH--BACR provides direct services to individuals and families needing support to overcome barriers to success. Alcohol and Drug, Tobacco, and Mental Health programs deliver prevention and treatment services to youth and adults having a broad spectrum of needs, ranging from the need for basic information to treatment for chronic alcoholism and drug recovery. Our environmental prevention services aim to change community norms about alcohol, drugs, and tobacco use.
HEALTHY COMMUNITIES--BACR strives to create vibrant, accessible, inclusive hubs that are safe, open, and nurturing places for participants to belong and call home. Through our Healthy Communities programs, we operate school- and community-based resource centers that offer integrated, coordinated services and programs where children, youth, and families can find support, resources, and community. Programs include a West County First 5 Center based in San Pablo, Healthy Start programs in Richmond, San Francisco, and San Rafael (Canal community), the Bahia Vista Even Start program (Canal community), Early Childhood Development programs in Marin, and high school health centers and community schools in East Oakland and West Contra Costa.
NATIONAL SERVICE--Giving back is vital to healthy development. Through BACR's National Service program, participants achieve personal benefits by having opportunities to contribute to community improvement. Communities benefit as well through the tutoring, mentoring, and health education provided by BACR's AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps members are placed at more than 60 local schools and programs where these services are provided.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP--BACR supports young people to make positive decisions about their health, education, and employment. Youth Leadership programs are youth-led, foster civic engagement, and promote community improvement. To ensure that services are accessible, our projects and outreach activities are delivered in a range of school- and community-based settings.
