What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Next Generation Youth Programs
BAVC’s Next Generation (youth) programs offer a flexible pathway for young people who may lack parental
support, school support, and the extra-curricular and leadership opportunities to become educated in digital media and technology while acquiring 21st Century skills. BAVC’s programs help young people develop their artistic talent while providing them with advanced, industry-standard training in new media and helping them develop the “soft” skills necessary to successfully collaborate on and produce a
high-quality creative product. At the heart of BAVC’s youth programming is the belief that when given the chance to express themselves creatively through digital media, young people become engaged makers of media and thereby engaged members of the community. They bond to peer networks, mentors, and community members. They gain the confidence, skills and passion to imagine and pursue a positive future for themselves. They become part of larger media conversations where their voices are missing and desperately needed.
Training
BAVC provides industry-certified video, digital audio,
web design, and multimedia training to more than 6,000 adult students annually.
Through state and industry partnerships, BAVC offers fee-for-service,
subsidized and free training to a variety of media professionals, returning
workers, community-based organizations, and low-income youth and adults.
Preservation
From podcasts to video blogs, there is no question that digital media has revolutionized how we view art and performance. Today it is relatively cheap and easy to capture digital media of a performance or
cultural event. But while cultural institutions like dance companies and visual artists are eagerly picking up technology to create, preserve and distribute their work, they are largely experimenting
without a set of standards or technical best practices. BAVC is the nation’s largest non-profit preservation organization, and we are leading the field in developing preservation standards for the future, and providing hands-on expertise to practitioners as they implement these new standards. In 2003, we produced PLAYBACK, an interactive DVD that invites users to view the technical practices of
video preservation and to experience the complex decision-making process engaged in by artists, conservators and video engineers as they reconstruct video artwork.
Independent Media
Independent Media supports, incubates, develops, and mentors the highest quality and most promising public media projects—those that stretch traditional boundaries of creativity and form, as well as those that
have clear potential for deep social impact. Creative Programs currently operates four core programs: Producers Institute for New Media Technologies, Nonprofit Institute for New Media Applications, Fiscal Sponsorship and MediaMaker Awards.
