What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
LINES Ballet Company
Celebrating 36 years, LINES Ballet continues to receive acclaim for Alonzo King's visionary choreography and for the extraordinary quality of its dancers. When not on tour, performing in venues from the Venice Biennale to the Montpellier Dance Festival, the Company appears onstage during Spring and Fall home seasons in San Francisco. Collaborating with noted composers, musicians, and visual artists, Alonzo King creates works that draw on a diverse set of deeply rooted cultural traditions and imbue classical ballet with new expressive potential. Alonzo King creates at least two world premiere ballets each year.
LINES Dance Center
Founded in 1989, the LINES Dance Center is San Francisco's largest public dance studio and has served over a million students since its inception. The LINES Dance Center operates directly out of our official San Francisco home, offering nearly 80 open classes each week, Teens at LINES for dancers ages 11 - 18, as well as workshops and master classes that provide access to elite choreographers, companies, and artists. From the absolute beginner to the professional dancer, LINES Ballet's LINES Dance Center offers everything from ballet to modern, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, and global dance in an environment that is inspiring and approachable. The LINES Dance Center connects Alonzo's philosophy and vision and encourages artistry, dance education, and discovery through various dance forms.
BFA Program at Dominican University
Alonzo King LINES Ballet and Dominican University of California jointly offer a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance degree program, one of the only programs of its kind in the United States. Combining the highly acclaimed dance training and philosophy of one of the nation's foremost dance institutions with the comprehensive liberal arts education and social values of the Dominican tradition, the LINES/Dominican BFA in Dance offers students an unparalleled opportunity to discover themselves as artists and human beings.
Summer Program
The LINES Ballet Summer Program offers a unified approach to training rooted in the philosophy of Alonzo King. The annual, pre-professional intensives are designed for aspiring artists ages 11-25, who are selected through a competitive nationwide audition process. LINES Ballet's renowned faculty guides students on a collaborative journey that values artistic risk-taking and independent thinking. Students explore a variety of dance techniques, with ballet as its core discipline. Emphasis is placed on cultivating the ability to recognize individual gifts and express themselves with fluency.
Training Program
The LINES Ballet Training Program is a full-time two-year professional experience for avid dancers ages 18-24. LINES Ballet's exceptional faculty propels students beyond preconceived limitations and encourages the embodiment of excellence. Through technical aptitude and artistic fortitude, the Training Program's ultimate goal is to develop strong, versatile, intelligent dance artists who are empowered to share their unique voice.
Community Programs
LINES Ballet’s free education programs are designed to share choreographer Alonzo King’s vision of touching hearts and stirring minds through dance with communities of all kinds by creating diverse points of access to high-impact arts education and live arts experiences. HeART with LINES is the organization's flagship Community Program, and offers free in- and after-school dance integration residencies for Bay Area youth. KIDS at LINES sparks the imagination of San Francisco's youngest artists (ages 3-10) through day camps and after-school programs designed to support child-development and basic dance technique. Dance for Parkinson's Disease (PD), a partnership with the Mark Morris Dance Group, improves the lives of individuals with Parkinson's Disease and their loved ones through weekly classes that explore movement, music, balance, space, and rhythm in a fun and encouraging environment. Each session features live music and focuses on building strength, coordination, and community through dance.
