Mission

MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to fight for equal access to housing for everyone by eliminating barriers to housing choice such as discrimination, sub-standard housing, ignorance, apathy and malice in order to eradicate illegal housing discrimination, prevent evictions/foreclosures and encourage diversity in our neighborhoods. We do this by assisting individuals in exercising their housing rights to obtain and maintain the home of their choice and by promoting understanding by tenants and landlords, housing consumers and housing providers of their rights and responsibilities through housing rights counseling/advocacy, education, outreach, investigation, mediation, self-advocacy, legal referrals and enforcement of fair housing laws.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

We provide services in four major areas:

Housing Rights Advocacy - we assist individual households get and keep their homes by excercising their housing rights.

Housing Opportunity Center - We assist low income households increase assest through financial education and/or homeownership education. The Mt. Diablo Housing Opportunity Center, located in Concord, CA. focuses on serving immigrant communities.

Enforcement Program - this program includes a Lawyer Referral Service through which we help low income households access private legal services and our Testing Program through which we investigate housing discrimination.

Affordable Housing Advocacy Project - we support the efforts of subsidized housing residents become involved in decisions regarding their housing.

Industry outreach - we provide technical assistance and training programs to housing professionals.

Population(s) Served

We counsel renters, and homeowners in foreclosure, regarding their rights and options.

We refer low and lower income households to private attorneys to up to 30 minute consultations for a small fee ($10 to $50)
