Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

School Gardens

Research indicates that integrating garden-based learning into the school environment generates a variety of positive outcomes for students – including physical, intellectual, psychological and more.

We’ve seen this in action at our own Kansas Avenue Learning Garden. Kids love being outside, tasting fresh food and getting their hands dirty while they learn. And teachers report that our outdoor classroom is a great complement to what students learn indoors!

In 2016, we began taking what we’ve learned here on Kansas Ave. to more local schools through our “Garden For Every School” initiative. Achieving this vision requires a multi-faceted approach that provides several types of support for teachers, schools and gardens — including a regional garden educator network, a school garden grant fund, and district-level support.

At the Environmental Center, we believe that educating kids about sustainability is crucial to a healthy future for people and the planet. We empower future leaders to create a sustainable tomorrow with hands-on educational programs in local classrooms, and outside in gardens and on public lands. We help students understand the connection between humans and the environment, and to make decisions that reduce their impact.

In addition to educating kids, we also support local schools and educators working to put sustainability into practice.

We are in a time when we need to Rethink Waste – what we view as waste, how we can prevent it, and what we can do with it. Our in-county Knott Landfill is projected to be full by 2029.

Our Rethink Waste Project provides waste prevention and reduction education for Deschutes County residents. Rethink Waste is about changing our relationship with our stuff, and taking time to recognize the upstream and downstream effects of our consumption and avoiding waste in both directions. We connect residents, businesses and tourists to resources that help make this happen!

Population(s) Served
Adults

Since 1988, we’ve brought people, business and government together to help shape a sustainable community. Our work today extends far beyond environmental education. We're a hub for engagement and action across the region. We bring people together at events like the Earth Day Fair and Parade, Green Drinks, and Sustainability Awards. And we advocate for local and state-wide government policies that support and encourage climate action and a sustainable, equitable future.

Population(s) Served
Adults

We believe Central Oregon can (and should) be a leader in a low-carbon, clean energy future. We work to advocate for and implement ambitious energy and climate plans and accelerate the equitable adoption of low carbon technologies in our community such as solar and electric vehicles.

GuideStar partnered with Equity in the Center - an organization that works to shift mindsets, practices, and systems to increase racial equity - to create this section. Learn more

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
