Mission

Our mission is to enhance the experience of care for caregivers and care recipients and to inspire each other to live fully in the face of the universal experience of loss. We do this through teaching mindfulness and compassion as practical tools to improve well-being, and by using conversation to bring loss out into the open.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We will all be touched by caregiving at some point in our lives. Providing care can be rewarding and life-enhancing, but can also bring significant challenges and emotional strain that can lead to poor emotional, psychological and physical health. This is true for family, professional and clinical caregivers.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Volunteer Caregiving Program

Volunteer Caregivers receive 55 hours of training and commit to providing five hours per week serving at the bedside of residents in the palliative care ward in Laguna Honda Hospital, San Francisco. Volunteer caregivers are invited to participate in monthly community meetings and several retreats and events throughout the year. Volunteers are asked to commit to a year’s service but often stay much longer, with the average length of service being five years.

Population(s) Served
Caregivers
Chronically ill people
Terminally ill people

Zen Caregiving Project teaches Mindful Caregiving Education (MCE) courses and workshops. MCE was developed over our 30 years of experience serving at the bedside of the ill and dying. The course introduces caregivers to mindfulness-based approaches and tools to help build their emotional resilience and work with stress. These approaches help caregivers successfully navigate the unique and challenging situations that can arise in caregiving. We run courses for family caregivers, professional caregivers and clinical caregivers.

Courses are offered to general public, and we work with organizations and health systems to design tailored courses to fit their members' needs.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Zen Caregiving Project wants to reach and support caregivers, equipping them with mindfulness-based tools and techniques that allow them to build emotional resiliency, and protecting them from ill-health and burnout and improving wellbeing.

Zen Caregiving Project takes a range of approaches to reaching and supporting caregivers:

- Providing Open Enrollment courses open to all caregivers: These courses are listed on our website and shared through partner organizations that support caregivers.

- Working with Healthcare Organizations: We work with major healthcare providers, both directly delivering caregiving courses to family caregivers and staff and also building internal organizational capacity to support family caregivers. We also offer a Train-the-Trainer program, in which which we train hospital staff to deliver courses to family caregivers, using materials specially designed by Zen Caregiving Project.

- Providing Custom Courses: We offer tailored courses to support commercial and non-profit organizations. We can run courses and workshops on a range of topics, which meet the various needs of staff and caregivers.

- Working with Partner organizations to translate our courses: To reach a broad audience we have partnered with Chinese-speaking and Spanish-speaking organizations to translate our courses and reach new audiences.

- Volunteer Program: We train our volunteers in compassionate, mindful caregiving and the serve at the bedside of patients in Palliative Care settings.

We implement our strategy with a small but dedicated team of staff, and a community of dedicated instructors. With a 30 year history, we have built a reputation for a unique and effective approach to caregiving and have grown a strong and supportive community. We also work hard to build meaningful and lasting partnerships with other organizations in the field. Due to the diverse and increasing caregiver population, only by partnering with others can we truly reach the number of caregivers that are in need.
