Mission

OK International works to build capacity in developing countries to identify, monitor, and correct environmental and/or occupational exposures to hazardous materials in order to protect public health and the environment. We provide technical assistance, training, and information on environmental and public health issues to NGOs, governments, universities, and private corporations.

Safer Mining

Small-scale, informal mining is a growing industry throughout the world and globally it is responsible for approximately 20% of the gold supply, 25% of tin, 26% of tantalum, 20% of cobalt, and 20% of diamonds. Many countries are looking to ways to formalize and regulate this activity as part of an economic development strategy. Our focus is on incorporating safer practices to reduce health and safety hazards to miners.

Lead has been used for thousands of years in products including paints, gasoline, cosmetics, and even children’s toys, but lead battery production is by far the largest consumer of lead. Chronic exposures to lead affect both children and adults. We also see regular reports of localized mass acute lead poisonings.

We provide technical assistance and capacity building to address exposures from multiple sources in the environment and in the workplace.
